The square is considered the only Jewish courtyard in Germany still intact. The courtyard houses an exhibition with many pictures on Perleberg's history.

The Stepenitz is a beautiful river that meanders through the beautiful landscape of the Prignitz. You can even watch salmon, as attempts have been made to reintroduce the fish here since 2000.

In the Middle Ages, a "Jew's courtyard" was the area around the synagogue, the place of study and prayer of a Jewish community. In the morning, the Torah students met here, and in the evening, members of the community reached the mikveh, their ritual bath. Weddings were celebrated here, courts were held here according to Jewish law, and improvised huts were built for the Feast of Tabernacles. The Jew's courtyard was both a public and spiritual place.

Council minutes of the town of Perleberg from 1498 contain the earliest reference to the existence of a Roland in the town. It is not identical to the Roland statue that stands today. The Roland from 1498, probably made of wood, has been lost. There is still no clear statement about when exactly the new Perleberg Roland was built from stone.

In 1498 a statue of Roland was first mentioned. It is very likely a predecessor of the current 5.4 m high sandstone figure from the 16th century. The statue bears the year 1546 in two places. Future research is reserved as to which municipal rights and freedoms the Perleberger Roland symbolizes.
