Sils Maria is a historic village in the Engadine, known for its connection to Friedrich Nietzsche and its cultural significance. In the beautiful Engadine village of Sils, at 1802 meters above sea level, everything is a little more intense: the tranquility, the changing seasons, the light, nature – happiness. Vacationers who found St. Moritz too hectic continued on to Sils Maria. That's how it was a hundred years ago; and that's how it still is today. It's palpable at every turn: those who come to Sils want to nourish their souls. And in doing so, they want to experience the warmth of a small village with around 810 inhabitants, where tourism has a long tradition and has been a way of life for over 100 years. Two Hearts, One Soul Sils Maria and Sils Baselgia: Our village has two names because it comprises two settlements. Sils Baselgia grew up around the Church of San Lurench. It was first mentioned in 1356 and still stands today. "Baselgia" is derived from basilica (church). In Sils Maria, the larger of the two villages, the large dairy farm once stood. The name "Maria" refers not to a proper name, but to the term "dairy farm." "Sils" means something like "green meadow" or "long strip of land." This also referred to the Sils lake plain. It is still a "green meadow"—thanks to landscape and nature conservation efforts and the awareness of these values that the people of Sils possess. The original building was acquired by Fritz Hanselmann around 1894 and remodeled into its present form around 1910 by Nicolaus Hartmann Jr. The richly decorated facade, which, according to Ivano Rampa, is more reminiscent of Engadine furniture carving than the classic sgraffito technique, was executed by Emil Weber, a brother of Mili Weber. For over a century, St. Moritz's guests, from active-duty soldiers in the two World Wars to celebrities from film, culture, business, and politics, have frequented the confectionery and tea room, where they are now pampered by the fourth generation of the Mutschler-Hanselmann family with a wide array of homemade specialties. More than 115 years of a traditional café and bakery – a history steeped in tradition fills the air with satisfaction and pride. Fritz Hanselmann and his wife Theresia, née Müller, are the founders of the company. Both came from southern Germany: Fritz Hanselmann from Crailsheim, and Theresia from Langenargen on Lake Constance. They were, as we would say today, guest workers: Fritz Hanselmann was head baker at the Kulm Hotel, and Theresia worked in a private household in Chur. After their marriage, they opened their own bakery in what is now the Haus Elvezia. At the request of their guests, mostly English, Theresia Hanselmann would serve them in their private apartment using the family's china. Thus, their apartment was likely the first tea room in St. Moritz. At the end of the century, Fritz and Theresia Hanselmann acquired the property on Via Maistra, which remains the headquarters of Konditorei Hanselmann to this day. The house was expanded and had additional stories added in several construction phases. By 1907, the building already had its current floor plan, but still featured a gable roof. Start of the natural bobsleigh run in St. Moritz-Celerina, which is naturally rather bleak in summer.
