Great place to stop for coffee

Nice descent into Croyde.

We didn't find the beach very nice today - it was rocky, a bit unkempt, and there were lots of dogs. But there were lots of restaurants around it! Maybe we were just unlucky? It didn't look anything like the photos we posted. The fact that the A-road runs right past it doesn't make it any better.

This small sandy and rocky beach is flanked by the highest cliffs in England. There is a large parking area right above the beach, as well as a public toilet.

Castle Hill was built in 1730 by the Fortescue family and reconstructed following a large fire in 1934. It was caused by the boiler for the newly installed central heating and tragically killed both the housekeeper and a maid. On top of the hill behind the house is Sham Castle. The family still live on the estate which is now also used as a wedding and conference venue and the gardens are open to the public. Illfracombe Harbour is many centuries old and is still a working port with a fleet of fishing vessels as well as leisure cruisers and sea-life safari boats. On the quay you will find pubs, restaurants, shops, fish and chips, ice cream, cafes and public toilets. Plus Damien Hirst's 'Verity', a 20m bronze statue, 'a modern allegory of truth and justice', on loan to Ilfracombe for 20 years since 2012.

Combe Martin is a little village boasting a quiet beach cove and a harbour. Despite being small, Combe Martin's high street is a mile and a half long and once held the longest street party which is recorded as a Guinness World Record. There are plenty of places to eat and drink with seafood unsurprisingly being a speciality.

Best place in North Devon for bike selection and bike service . Helped me set up my new Wahoo Bike computer - nothing too much for these people. Taw Velo Cycle groups organised from here and an annual charity ride called the 'Smugglers ' which is a grand day with BBQ on finish line.

Along the Sustrans National Cycle Route 27 (Ilfracombe to Plymouth) you'll find a network of tunnels here. They're short but take care in bright sunshine as your eyes take a while to adjust to the darkness - lights are very handy here! Like this section, a lot of the route follows former railway lines.

Some great views of Ilfracombe and surrounding areas with Verity dominating the vista. Especially nice from up by the church of st Nicholas which has a short but lovely and steep climb up to it. Admittedly I’m not sure cycling is allowed up, though no signs ban it. It was quiet when I went and did and could push up without problem! 🤷‍♂️

Great shop with a huge selection of bikes of all kinds and for all ages as well as clothes and accessories. Great cafe attached which serves a very good coffe. Friendly and helpful staff to boot, thoroughly recommended!

Combe Martin Beach is set in a picturesque location just below the village. It’s surrounded by some of the highest sea cliffs in England and is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The beach itself is a mixture of shingle and pebbles but gets sandier as you approach the water. It’s a great spot for swimming as its sheltered position offers protection from stronger currents and waves. However, there is no lifeguard so care should be taken.
