The approximately 500-meter-long linden avenue was planted by Johann Nepomuk Steindl in the second half of the 19th century. The avenue is a must for any bike tour around Holzkirchen, but please do not cycle through it; the path is closed. You can see it even when pushing your bike.

A version of the various legends about the Teufelsgraben can be read here: https://www.sagen.at/texte/sagen/deutschland/bayern/isarwinkel/teufelsgraben.html In fact, the ditch was created by debris from the Karwendel Mountains clogging the course of the Isar and the meltwater had to find an alternative route at the end of the Würm Ice Age. It hollowed out the area west of Holzkirchen here. In the cool and often damp sea of trees in the Teufelsgraben you can go hiking and running. The valley stretches roughly in a northwesterly direction from Kirchsee to Grub over a total of 23 kilometers.

These lime trees, more than 100 years old, make a beautiful, cinematic setting. Johann Nepomuk Steindl, nature lover and teacher in Holzkirchen, planted the almost 400m long avenue named after him together with his students in the last third of the 19th century. The Steindlallee has been protected as a natural monument since 1964. The trees are so narrow and staggered that you walk down the avenue in small, wavy lines. In addition, when visibility is good, you have a great view of the mountain panorama, including Wendelstein on the left and Benediktenwand on the right.
