Audlem is a stunning little town with a striking church and high street. Nice to see a place decked out with Union Flags.

I made the route start from Moreton Say, a really attractive village with free parking near the village pond.

St Alkmund’s Church is a captivating Grade I-listed building. Founded in 912 AD, the church was initially built of white stone, which is why the town is called Whitechurch. However, in 1711 the tower collapsed and had to be rebuilt in red sandstone ashlar, which is why the ‘white church’ looks a little redder than you might expect.

The church of St Swithun in Cheswardine. First built in the 13th centaury with the tower added in the late 15th centaury and then several modifications since. It's now a grade 2 listed building. As a different rider said the deep porch is useful to escape the rain.

The parish church, dedicated to St Swithun, overlooks Cheswardine from the hill at the top of the village. This is at least the third church on this site, and was rebuilt in 1887 - 1889 under the direction of the esteemed architect John Loughborough Pearson, who died before the work was completed. The work was completed with the assistance of funding by the then squire of the Cheswardine Estate, Charles Donaldson-Hudson, who evidently provided half of the estimated cost of £8,500.

Ruins of a 16th century castle that was ruined during the Civil War. Under the care of English Heritage now and free to wander around. It's an imposing site from the roadside, but getting up close to the building is advised.

Focal point of the nice town of Whitchurch. The town takes its name from the white stone originally used to make the church, way back in around the 10th Century AD. A very impressive building and well worth checking out if you have time to stop.

Open daily from 11am, the Red Lion Brewery Tap at Joule's Brewery offers plenty of refreshment options. Brewery tours and tasting once a month.

This castle has undergone centuries of building work with the oldest parts dating back to the 12th century. Much of what remains is from the 16th century and it's in extraordinary condition with large sections of wall still standing. It was ruined during the Civil War. The castle is under the care of English Heritage and is free to enter and walk around.

Lovely church and great porch to escape the rain if needed!
