Great little stop off point. Great food and lovely beer garden.

The northern end near Sturmer is narrow and twisting but the surface is fairly decent, especially as you climb away from the junction with the main road, but the road towards Steeple Bumpstead is in poor condition and covered in piles of loose sand and stones. One that’s better for the tourers than the roadies.

The monument to the 4th Earl of Bristol. From the terrace in the Italianate Gardens, look out for a glimpse of a tall monument peeking above the trees. Situated in a pasture field on the far side of the Estate, you can reach it by taking a long walk across open land and through Lownde Wood. The monument was erected in 1817 by the grateful people of Derry to the memory of the 4th Earl of Bristol, Frederick Hervey who was also the Bishop of Derry. It was built by the masons John and Robert de Carle and has inscriptions in both English and Latin on its east and west faces. On the west face, it describes the Earl Bishop’s work in encouraging a better understanding between the warring factions in Ireland. It's an unusual monument, as it was paid for by both the Protestant and Catholic communities in Derry.

Can't do better than quote the welcome from the Fox Inn's website, "Where the unique and wonderful gather to enjoy exquisite food and drink, spectacular music and a grand old time. It’s a place where laughter is not far away, where musicians and performers can play their craft and where new friends can become old friends over a glass of something wonderful." Quite a billing to live up too? You will find that the Fox Inn does so admirably. Add to this at 123m it is the highest point in Suffolk that you can buy a pint, with the county top itself (Great Wood Hill) only a few metres higher.

The 16th-century Kentwell Hall is a stately home in Long Melford and one of the finest moated Tudor Houses in the country. Surrounded by beautiful parkland and gardens, it's a wonderful sight to behold. The hall has been used many times for film and television and also hosts weddings, historical re-enactments and other events. It’s open to the public all year round, though you’ll need to buy a ticket to enter.

The cathedral-esque Holy Trinity Church in Long Melford is a sight to behold. Grade I-listed, it was funded by the region's prosperous wool trade and built between 1467 and 1497 in the late Perpendicular Gothic style. Thought by many to be one of the finest religious buildings in the country, a visit is a must when hiking in the area.

The Fox is a lovely and friendly pub. I enjoyed a fine pint of Greene King IPA which wasn’t a difficult choice - I was weaned on this stuff! There were a few locals already inside when I arrived and in the immediate absence of the Landlady, it was they who let me in and welcomed me. Others were coming and going and the atmosphere really was that of a public house in the true sense. With the sun streaming in, and a nice fire in the corner, it would have been easy to have stayed for “the other one” or two.
