Pastor Friedrich Fischer (d. 1857) initiated the erection. His successor, Sebastian Walter, implemented the plan in 1859. The aim was to create a visible symbol of the Catholic faith amidst the conflict of religious movements. The construction was financed by donations (approximately 4,000 guilders).
