This picturesque moated medieval castle was built in the 1370s by Sir John de la Mare. It's heavily influenced by French design and features a compact layout with four round corner towers and thick defensice walls.

Same as above - there is a cafe, but attempt to use it at your own risk. They allowed us to buy a coffee, but promptly asked to move on immediately after. Coffee is mediocre anyway...

Longleat house up close and personal is stunning.

Atop Castle Hill, you find the remains of Mere Castle, a medieval fort built by the Earl of Cornwall in 1253. Whilst you can only observe the earthworks these days, at one time the castle boasted six towers, a hall, inner and outer gates, a well, and a chapel. The hill is a prominent landmark and affords fine views over the town of Mere.

Perhaps one of the most famous stately homes in the UK, Longleat is an impressive Elizabethan prodigy house. Longleat is set amongst 1,000 acres of parkland, home to the first safari park outside Africa. Construction on the house began in 1568 on the site of a priory which had burnt down. Originally designed for Sir John Thynn, the estate remains in the same family today. The flamboyant artist Alexander Thynn and his son Ceawilin Thynn currently live in the house. You can visit Longleat from 10am - 5pm daily. It's well worth exploring the safari and other attractions as well. Tickets for adults cost £17.00 online. The 24 cycle route goes through Longleat letting you cycle right past the impressive Longleat house. You also often spot some animals as you pass through- gifaffes, hippos and kangeroos!
