Just to note that this small section of trailway has some looser stones which will be unsuitable for slimmer (road bike) tyres but the further you travel West towards Ringwood, the surface becomes more forest like and therefore more pleasant to ride on.

Known as the ‘Castleman’s Corkscrew’ due to the shape it cut across the forest and Charles Castleman who promoted it The now disused railway line was first proposed in 1844 and ran from Southampton to Dorchester. The line was only disassembled in the 1960’s with over a hundred years of use and today forms part of the National Cycle Network. The route begins in Brockenhurst, a charming village in the centre of the New Forest. Brockenhurst has great links by rail to explore the Forest car free. A place to unwind and spend time enjoying the outdoors. Brockenhurst has plenty of amenities, refreshments, places to stay and more.

With Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, (or Alfred Lord Tennyson), to whom this monument is dedicated, we go back in time to the middle of the 19th century, because the poet, who was already a prominent figure at that time, lived from 1809 to 1892. I had to research the term “Poet Laureate” mentioned by mi1994, and of course Wikipedia also knows something about it: “In the United Kingdom, Poet Laureate is the office of a court poet whose job it is to write poems for official occasions and national events.” Tennyson was awarded this honorary office by Queen Victoria in 1850 and raised to the peerage in the same year.

Black Knowl (New Forest) Caravan and Motorhome Club site is within what was once the royal hunting forest of William the Conqueror and now a beautiful National Park. It has an open, peaceful aspect while being conveniently located within walking distance of Brockenhurst. The site is in a wonderful setting in the forest and in October at night, stags can be heard roaring in the forest, along with owls and other forest creatures. The town offers plenty of good quality restaurants, places of interest and shopping treats to keep everyone in the family happy on their holiday. The site has 130 grass or hardstanding pitches of which 18 are serviced. All have 16 amp electricity. The site is adjacent to over 140 miles of lovely walking track for you to explore in the Forest whether on foot, bicycle or horseback. For those with an interest in local history, the Lyndhurst Museum and Visitors' Centre will shed more than enough light on the rich and fascinating past of the Forest. Other nearby attractions include The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Exbury Gardens and The New Forest Reptile Centre. You can reach the Isle of Wight via Lymington Ferry. If you fancy some retail therapy, the Southampton and Bournemouth shopping centres are within easy driving distance from the site and will leave you spoilt for choice.
