So if you're in the area and willing to pay the entrance fee, then you can take a look. If you don't see it, you're not missing much. It's really just a small area that's well worth seeing. But I have to be fair ☝️... ... the circular trail was closed because of a landslide. So we're missing half of the trail. Maybe the other half would have changed our minds. For people who spend a lot of time in nature, it's OK, nothing more. I hope I'm not lynched here now 😬🙈. There's really beautiful nature in Dartmoor and it's free too 😉.

Warning! Apparently there was a landslide, so the path along the river is closed. You can only get to the waterfall through the National Trust area. Entry fee is £11 per person! It's no longer a quiet place. Children play right by the waterfall, so you can't take any nice photos. It's a real shame! We would have liked to have known this before the hike. Then we definitely wouldn't have done it!!!

Excellent pizza and undercover, outdoor seating at the Castle Inn! No issues taking our bikes into the garden.

The adventurous path through the gorge, past the White LaDy waterfall, the Tunnel Falls and the Devils Couldron is always worth it!

Sourton Tor is a fine tor sitting in the north west corner of Dartmoor, high above the village of Sourton. There are 5 or 6 outcrops of rocks scattered over a wide area, one of which has an appearance of a crooked nose witch! There’s a trig point beside the highest of these outcrops, with brilliant views to the west and Cornwall. However there are also views into Dartmoor with Great Links Tor and Yes Tor also in view. There are plenty of parking places below this tor, use the road up to the water works for the best parking spots, making it an easy ascent from there. On the northern side of this tor is the old iceworks factory, used to produce ice in the winter months to help transport food. This tor is not in the military firing range although heading any further east (about a 1km) will put you into the Okehampton range.

Lydford is a pretty little village on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and hides, within its boundaries, several amazing features. One of these is its castle, of Norman origin that was rebuilt in the late 12th century with the tower being renovated in the 13th century. Consistently used over the centuries and repeatedly overhauled, it eventually fell into disuse in the 19th century. Free to enter, you can enjoy its large, sloping lawn after you've had a nose about the tiny building. A perfect picnic spot, the castle sits in utter tranquillity.

This impressive jumble of granite rocks lies in the far north west of Dartmoor National Park. With high, open moorland to the south and east, and flatter, patchwork farmland to the west and north, Sourton Tors provide fantastic views. It's well worth hiking up to the summit from the numerous trails that go around the base, particularly on a clear day. Be mindful of the weather on the tors as well as on the open moor in general. Exposed, particularly from prevailing winds (and rain), the weather can turn quickly.

Lydford Gorge is spectacular and one of its most impressive features is the Devil's Cauldron. This natural whirlpool is in its element after heavy rain, when water hurtles into this cavern, creating an almost deafening noise. The surroundings are lush and green, giving the Cauldron a rather otherwordly feel.

The first Christian church in Lydford was a wooden structure built c. 650 AD. It is probable that this church was burnt down by the Vikings in their raid of 997 AD. The dedication of the parish church to St. Petrock would seem to indicate that it was built on the site of an existing British settlement. The church was later rebuilt in the perpendicular gothic style, and although ostensibly Norman, some of the architectural furniture, for example the font, were of the Anglo-Saxon style (or at latest, early Norman), thus it would appear that the church was rebuilt upon the site of the earlier building. The church was enlarged in the 13th century, the tower being added in the 15th century. A further enlargement occurred c. 1890 with the addition of the vestry and northern aisle.

Lydford is a small ancient village on the banks of the river Lyd established by King Alfred late in the 9th century as a fortification to defend the country from the Vikings and the Cornish. The village became famous for its silver pennies mined and minted locally and the stunning Lydford Gorge with the White Lady Waterfall. Lydford has also been home to two medieval castles, one of which still remains. It was built in the year 1195 at a reported cost of £32 originally as a Royal castle given by King John to William Bruere in 1216 and then by King Henry III to his brother, Richard, Earl of Cornwall, in 1337. Throughout the centuries the castle was notoriously known as ‘a strong house for keeping prisoners’, and by the 18th century, it was used purely as a court of law and gaol being described as ‘being a place most odious, filthy and vile...'. The court and prison earned a grim reputation for hanging defendants in the morning and passing judgement in the afternoon. In 1900 S. Baring-Gould mentioned in his 'A book of Dartmoor' a poem attributed to William Browne in 1644:- "I oft have heard of Lydford Law, How in the morn they hang and draw, And sit in judgment after: At first I wondered at it much, But soon I found the matter such As it deserved no laughter. They have a castle on a hill; I took it for some old wind-mill, The vanes blown off by weather. Than lie therein one night 'tis guessed 'Twere better to be stoned or pressed Or hanged, ere you come thither." Lydford Castle's role continued right up until the early nineteenth century when it was abandoned in preference to a new prison built at Princetown to house French prisoners of war. This has since become the infamous Dartmoor Prison.

Especially after rainy days you can hear the power of the water rushing at an unbelievable volume. But be careful on the irregular and above all unsecured steps!

The £ 10 entry was definitely worth it. The slightly over 5km long circuit was spectacular. Definitely wear sturdy footwear with a good profile. Especially after rainy days, the surface is extremely smooth. Cornerwise, the paths are very narrow, so you can not pass each other. Therefore, there are sections with prescribed direction. There is a lot going on and off, with irregular, often high levels. A bit of basic condition should already exist. For breaks, there are the tearooms and a picnic area. If you start early during the week, there is not much going on and you hardly meet other people on the way. A wonderful trip in beautiful nature!

A medieval castle on the fringes of Dartmoor National Park, Lydford Castle was built to help control revolt against Norman rule across Devon in the 11th century. The castle had a turbulent history over the centuries, passing to the Duchy of Cornwall in 1342 right up until 20th century. Today, the castle belongs to English Heritage who open it to visitors. You can also visit earthworks from the Normal fort. For more information, visit: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/lydford-castle-and-saxon-town/

After heavy rain the river creates dramatic whirlpools known as the Devil’s Cauldron and fills the spectacular potholes of Tunnel Falls.
