1月 3, 2026, St Peter's Church, Lilley

In the accounts of the Evangelists, who describe the events in the life of Jesus and his disciples in the New Testament, we find a very nuanced picture of the Apostle Saint Peter, to whom the patronage of this church in Lilley is entrusted. On the one hand, we encounter the convinced and resolute disciple of Jesus, who, for example, attended the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor; but on the other hand, he is not free from human weakness. The latter becomes very clear in the events of Holy Week: In the Garden of Gethsemane, he falls asleep—as do the other disciples—when Jesus, after the Last Supper, addresses God the Father and asks the disciples to pray as well; and after Jesus' arrest, Peter, out of fear, even denies three times that he knows him at all. But he also weeps over his weakness and, upon encountering the risen Christ, professes his love and loyalty to him. His real name is Simon, but Jesus gives him the name Peter (the word means 'rock'), upon which the Church is to be built, and gives him – according to the Gospel of Matthew – the "keys to the Kingdom of Heaven." His feast day – together with that of Saint Paul – is celebrated on June 29th in all Christian denominations.

The Clappers is a fascinating clump of trees on top of what was an Iron Age fort (!) The ascent is easy, but hikers should note that the descent (down a perilously steep set of makeshift wooden stairs) is challenging in the wet.

A fantastic forest walk with amazing views from above over the Chilterns, particularly towards the north. On the way, you will encounter a memorial by W A Robertson, who gave this area to the National Trust in memory of his brothers who died in the Great War. A great and enjoyable steep set of wooden stairs by the end of this stretch, too, as you rejoin the Chiltern Way.

The River Oughton flows next to Oughtonhead Common and the footpath between the two makes for a lovely place to run. You will also find a number of trails across the common. There are a variety of habitats on the common which is a nature reserve managed by Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. Keep and eye out for woodcock and kingfishers.

St Peter's Church is situated among pleasant countryside on the outskirts of Lilley. The church was built in the 12th century. However, it was rebuilt in 1871 and only a handful of original features remain. As such, it is Grade II-listed. Inside, you can observe a 15th-century octagonal clunch font and stained-glass windows from 1891.

A great hardpack trail on a steady incline, few roots and ruts to spice it up. Telegraph Hill is the peak of the segment. Short punchy climb and long flowing descent heading NE or a long steady climb heading SW. Caution on Pirton Road (at the NE end of segment), its a close pass waiting to happen. So use the track at side of the road for about 50m then either: cross over to Wood Lane for Pirton or turn right onto Chiltern cycleways for Great Offley

Wide, hard-pack trail between the trees. Several gnarly roots poking through so keep your eyes peeled! With either direction on this track, there is a climb to get over Telegraph Hill. There's a steeper incline on this segment, which makes for a great flowing descent if you are heading NE toward Pirton. Alternatively a good climb heading SW, steady does it! Caution at Pirton Road at the bottom, it's a close-pass waiting to happen, so use the track at side of the road then nip straight over to Wood Lane.

With awesome downhills, dirt jumps and dual slalom trails, Chicksands Bike Park is a whole lot of MTB fun in the woods. Helmets are obligatory at the park, and it's a good idea to don your gloves and knee/shin guards as some of the downhills are quite gnarly. Check their website for more info: http://www.chicksandsbikepark.co.uk/
