Some quiet, undulating lanes between Bittaford and South Brent make for a good way to finish (or start) a loop onto the moors, following National Cycle Network Route 2 (https://www.komoot.com/collection/2211292/dover-to-st-austell-national-cycle-network-route-2) and part of the Dartmoor Way cycle route. I always see plenty of other cyclists along here, but few cars as it runs parallel to the A38. A perfect way to skirt the moor!

A stone bridge, crossing the River Plym, in Dartmoor National Park. The banks of the Plym offer a great spot for a breather, and even a quick dip on a hot day. There's even sometimes an ice-cream van.

A fantastic cafe in the heart of Princetown. There's both inside seating and outdoor at the back in the gravelly courtyard, where you can also leave your bike. I'd highly rate the breakfasts as well as the hot pasties. A true cyclist's oasis on the moor!

From the River Dart, over the cattle grid and straight up the ramp of tarmac, what the Dartmeet climb lacks in length at 0.6 miles (1km), it more than makes up in gradient! The climb averages 11%, though measures 15% in some places. The view of Sharp Tor is worth it at the top though, on a good day. The climb is listed in Simon Warren's '100 Greatest Cycling Climbs'. A spectacular rolling road section along here from Hay Tor to Hemsworthy Gate and from Hemsworthy Gate towards Widecombe, with smooth tarmac and incredible moorland views. The gate refers to the cattle grid and stone wall near the road junction for Widecombe, Bickington and Hay Tor.
