The road is currently closed to cars (June 2024) due to erosion. You can pass it using the raised walkway and avoid a long detour.

The climb isn't too steep, it's just a long constant grind.

South Milton Sands is a large, pretty sandy beach. Great for some sand sprints. The coast path doesn't go down to the beach, but it's worth a detour if you aren't going for an FKT.

Winking Prawn offer a great breakfast and coffee stop.

Salcombe is cute, indeed, but frankly, also a bit posh. If you prefer more the nature and quietness, than better stay on this side of the estuary. Maybe you fancy a coffee with a view of Salcombe at Venus Cafe, just behind the steps down to the ferry quai?

Lovely hilly coastal road, quite a challenging ride and potentially busy at peak times, but always beautiful.

The coast road separates Slapton Sands and Slapton Ley, a National Nature Reserve on it's way between Slapton and Torcross. This road was built in 2002 after its predecessor was undermined by storms in 2001. In December 1943, around 3000 residents around this area were evacuated for 12 months for top secret D-Day landing practice on Slapton Sands, chosen for its similarity to Normandy beaches.

North Sands is one of Salcombe's two beaches. On the coast road south west of the beach, Salcombe Castle comes into view across the water. The castle, also known as Fort Charles, was build by Henry VIII as part of his sea defences against the French and Spanish. Later in history, it was the last place held by the Royalists in the 17th Century English Civil War. It was deliberately ruined by the victorious Parliamentarians after the Royalists surrendered.

Salcombe Harbour is home to both fishing boats and pleasure crafts with plenty of holiday makers enjoying time on yachts, paddle boards and kayaks. If you are very lucky you may spot dolphins or basking sharks in the summer months. Salcombe itself is a pretty town with narrow streets and plenty of places to refuel and rehydrate.

Hope Cove has two beaches, this one, Harbour Beach, at the South and Mouthwell Beach to the North. Hope Cove is a former fishing village now turned quiet seaside destination. It is quintessentially English with thatched cottages, sandy beaches, fish and chips and ice cream.

On the road between Blackpool and Stoke Fleming there is a beautiful view of Blackpool Sands. The beach itself is a sheltered spot, good for swimming or paddling and has lifeguards in the summer.

Beautiful view on the climb out of or descent into Torcross. You can see the narrow strip of land and beach which separates the lake from the sea.

Nice seating area below to enjoy the views of the harbour too.

Salcombe really is absurdly picturesque. To get a real feel for just how colourful is it, catch the ferry across to the eastern shore and admire the village from across the water. The beaches on the eastern shore are particularly lovely as well, and make a great excursion from Salcombe itself.
