7月 9, 2024, Paignton Pier
The Paignton Esplanade is a great place to stay. Classed as on-street car parking, you are able to stay over in a campervan (car parking charges apply); its a great way to enjoy the Esplanade and the Pier at day and night time.

5月 27, 2023, Greenway House (Agatha Christie's Holiday Home)
Greenway has been a crossing point of the Dart for hundreds of years. There was a 16th century Tudor Mansion here called Greenway Court. In 1700 the then owners moved to nearby Crompton Castle and sold Greenway. It passed through several generations until it was re-built in the current Georgian style in the late 1700's. In the early 1800's the Elton family developed the garden and added two wings to the house and paid for a new road and ferry to Dittisham. Over the next few years, the house and estate were further expanded and improved. Then in 1938 some of the estate was sold off and the house with 36 acres of garden and surrounding land was bought by Agatha Christie. They lived there until their deaths in 1976 and 1978. Their daughter lived there until 2004 but the National Trust acquired the house and collections in 2000. Today you can visit the house and gardens much as they were in Agatha Christies time. It's a beautiful place with a long stretch of river frontage. National Trust members are free but non-NT members must pay to visit the house and gardens.

Road bridge over River Avon. C17 or C18 packhorse bridge with hump back and widened on upstream side. Stone rubble. single round arch. Large stone slabs forming string with parapets above with large granite coping stones. In 1669 Lydia Bridge was in decay and the existing bridge appears to be either the restored earlier bridge or an entire rebuilding of late C17 or C18 https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101307206-lydia-bridge-south-brent#.Y_SY0SaZO3A

Since Karl Kehrle (aka Brother Adam) has modernized beekeeping here (with the Buckfast bee) and keeping it over the decades and thus revolutionized it in many areas, it has become a kind of place of pilgrimage for beekeepers.

While the first abbey in Buckfast was built here in 1018, much demolition and construction has happened since and the abbey that stands in the village today was actually built in the early 1900s. The abbey is a working Benedictine monastery and, amazingly, is self-sufficient with a small farm and a shop. This is also home to Buckfast Tonic Wine, a unique alcoholic drink with considerable caffeine. The abbey is well worth visiting as it has an impressive collection of buildings and is set in lovely grounds.

Very picturesque bridge of the River Avon with great views upstream from the bridge. Need to go downstream and scramble over the rocks for a good view up to the bridge. Great place to kick back and enjoy the view ride or walk or just picnic.

Lovely waterfall just above the bridge. Lots of teenagers jumping in the water when it's warm enough.

8月 15, 2017, Buckfast Abbey
Buckfast Abbey in Buckfastleigh is a Benedictine abbey and one of the few remaining active monasteries in Britain. The monastery was founded in 1018 by Lord Aylward in the Valley of the Dart. Little is known about the early days of the monastery. In 1136 it closed a congregation with the monastery Savigny and then belonged to the Cistercian order: From 1147 to 1539, the monastery was a Cistercian abbey. The church and buildings were destroyed in the course of the dissolution of the English monasteries under the reign of King Henry VIII, and for more than 300 years existed only ruins of the abbey. In 1882 it was then rented by Benedictines banished from France by the St. Augustines Priory in Ramsgate and later purchased for £ 4,700. The first abbot, Boniface Natter, died in 1906 in a shipwreck. His successor Anscar Vonier tackled the long-planned reconstruction of the abbey. The third abbot, Bruno Fehrenbacher, came from Upper Swabia like his predecessors. Source and more info: Wikipedia

3月 30, 2017, Paignton Pier
Paignton Pier is a pleasure pier in the large English seaside resort of Paignton, Devon. It was financed by Arthur Hyde Dendy, a local Paignton barrister and designed by George Soudon Bridgman. The 780 feet pier, with its customary grand pavilion at the seaward end, was opened to the public for the first time in June 1879. The pier-head pavilion was home to many forms of entertainment including singing, dancing, recitals, music hall, and most famously Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, re-titled HMS Pinafore on the water, performed by Mr D'Oyley's full company on 27 and 28 July 1880. In 1881 the pier-head was enlarged to facilitate the construction of a billiard room, adjoining the pavilion.

3月 30, 2017, Goodrington Sands North Beach
At the heart of the English Riviera, Goodrington Sands is well known as a safe family holiday destination, with a gently sloping sandy beach, which is well managed every morning by tractor, tides permitting, to remove seaweed and stones washed up by the sea. Goodrington Sands has all the normal facilities like beach huts, deck chairs, sunloungers and pedalo hire and also has beach manager supervision during the main season. Goodrington Sands is also famous for the steam railway which runs adjacent to the sea, and can be boarded here at Goodrington Station for a journey along the picturesque South Devonshire coast line to Kingswear, where you can cross the River Dart by ferry over to Dartmouth. Goodrington Sands also has a park with boating lake, nature reserve, go-karts and crazy golf and has a history dating back to the sixteenth century. There is also the old navel hospital from the Napoleonic war which is now a family friendly eatery pub which is part of the Brewer´s Fayre chain with plenty of outside seating taking in the breathtaking views of the bay.

1月 21, 2017, Greenway House (Agatha Christie's Holiday Home)
At the beloved holiday home of the famous and much-loved author Agatha Christie and her family you can take a glimpse into their lives. This relaxed and atmospheric house is set in the 1950s, when Agatha and her family would spend summers and Christmases here with friends, relaxing by the river, playing croquet and clock golf, and reading her latest mystery to their guests. The family were great collectors, and the house is filled with archaeology, Tunbridgeware, silver, botanical china and books. In the garden a large and romantic woodland drifts down the hillside towards the sparkling Dart estuary. The walled gardens are home to a restored peach house and vinery, as well as an allotment cared for by local school children. A visit to Greenway isn't complete without seeing the Boathouse, scene of the crime in 'Dead Man’s Folly', and the battery complete with cannon.
