The atmosphere especially at the shoreline is a strange mix of past glory, tourism and attempts to create a new relevance for the city. Worth experiencing, though probably not the #1 destination anymore as decades ago.

5月 13, 2025, Greenway House (Agatha Christie's Holiday Home)

From here, you have beautiful views of the River Dart and the surrounding countryside. The park is a wonderful place to stroll and admire the beautiful plants and trees. It's a lovely place to relax.

The pier offers a wonderful view. Agatha Christie often went roller skating on the pier, as this was very fashionable at the time. At that time there was a concert hall at the end of the pier, but unfortunately it burned down in 1974.

The Paignton Esplanade is a great place to stay. Classed as on-street car parking, you are able to stay over in a campervan (car parking charges apply); its a great way to enjoy the Esplanade and the Pier at day and night time.

Ultimate local pub recommendation: The Hole in the Wall, self-promoted as the oldest pub in Brighton. It is said to have existed since 1540. Everything is a bit older here: the furniture, the guests (I was far below the average age) and the band. Live music was played. And how! Drew Millin rocked the pub, the atmosphere was extraordinary. So if you're in the harbor here, you shouldn't miss this pub.

Greenway has been a crossing point of the Dart for hundreds of years. There was a 16th century Tudor Mansion here called Greenway Court. In 1700 the then owners moved to nearby Crompton Castle and sold Greenway. It passed through several generations until it was re-built in the current Georgian style in the late 1700's. In the early 1800's the Elton family developed the garden and added two wings to the house and paid for a new road and ferry to Dittisham. Over the next few years, the house and estate were further expanded and improved. Then in 1938 some of the estate was sold off and the house with 36 acres of garden and surrounding land was bought by Agatha Christie. They lived there until their deaths in 1976 and 1978. Their daughter lived there until 2004 but the National Trust acquired the house and collections in 2000. Today you can visit the house and gardens much as they were in Agatha Christies time. It's a beautiful place with a long stretch of river frontage. National Trust members are free but non-NT members must pay to visit the house and gardens.

Torquay harbour is also situated on the famous South West Coast Path, with short hikes to Brixham on the other side of Torbay and beyond to Dartmouth. The full 630 mile trek is the longest national trail, starting at Minehead in Somerset, passing through North Devon, the entire Cornish coast, South Devon, and finishing at Swanage in Dorset. The trail was the inspiration for the Bestselling novel The Salt Path by Raynor Winn.

A classic English holiday destination, Paignton's pier is brimming with activities for the whole family. It was opened to the public in 1879 and saw theatrical performances and other entertainment. Today, it's as popular as ever, with arcades, fairground rides, food outlets and bumper cars.

3月 30, 2017, Paignton Pier

Paignton Pier is a pleasure pier in the large English seaside resort of Paignton, Devon. It was financed by Arthur Hyde Dendy, a local Paignton barrister and designed by George Soudon Bridgman. The 780 feet pier, with its customary grand pavilion at the seaward end, was opened to the public for the first time in June 1879. The pier-head pavilion was home to many forms of entertainment including singing, dancing, recitals, music hall, and most famously Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, re-titled HMS Pinafore on the water, performed by Mr D'Oyley's full company on 27 and 28 July 1880. In 1881 the pier-head was enlarged to facilitate the construction of a billiard room, adjoining the pavilion.

At the heart of the English Riviera, Goodrington Sands is well known as a safe family holiday destination, with a gently sloping sandy beach, which is well managed every morning by tractor, tides permitting, to remove seaweed and stones washed up by the sea. Goodrington Sands has all the normal facilities like beach huts, deck chairs, sunloungers and pedalo hire and also has beach manager supervision during the main season. Goodrington Sands is also famous for the steam railway which runs adjacent to the sea, and can be boarded here at Goodrington Station for a journey along the picturesque South Devonshire coast line to Kingswear, where you can cross the River Dart by ferry over to Dartmouth. Goodrington Sands also has a park with boating lake, nature reserve, go-karts and crazy golf and has a history dating back to the sixteenth century. There is also the old navel hospital from the Napoleonic war which is now a family friendly eatery pub which is part of the Brewer´s Fayre chain with plenty of outside seating taking in the breathtaking views of the bay.

Torquay Harbour has close links with the leisure and tourism industry acting as a base for many boat trips and watersports. In addition to this, it remains a fully operational working harbour and bustling port. The main outer harbour and Torquay Marina provide both visitor and permanent pontoon berthings. The inner harbour offers additional permanent moorings and is located behind a tidal cill. The cill wall retains the water at low tide level, preventing the harbour from drying out and therefore retaining its attractive appearance. A striking pedestrian footbridge – the Millennium Bridge – spans the entrance to the inner harbour, linking North and South Piers. The style of the bridge reflects the sails of a ship and by night it is lit up providing an eye-catching backdrop to the area. Torquay Harbour is sheltered by two piers. Princess Pier to the west and Haldon Pier to the south. Princess Pier is a popular promenade complete with seating, and it also provides a favourable spot for anglers on the seaward side. On the harbourside, Beacon Quay offers a selection of retail outlets, chandlers, a modern slipway facility and wider quay with improved storage for dinghies. Additionally, the inner harbour is surrounded by a mixture of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars, establishing the harbour area as the main hub of the town. The vibrant atmosphere and picturesque setting of Torquay harbour and marina provides an ideal setting for a great number of exciting activities.

What better way to enjoy a waterfront stroll than along Torquay's palm-lined promenade and Princess Pier? The pier, built in 1890, is the perfect place to stop and gaze out to sea, or to enjoy watching the constant comings and goings in the adjacent marina. Plus there's the chance to catch sightseeing and fishing boat trips between Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and Greenway from the end of the pier, as well as banana boat rides! The pier is a firm feature of the Agatha Christie Mile, for the Queen of Crime - who grew up in Torquay - regularly went roller-skating with friends here during her youth. Torquay Museum’s Agatha Christie Gallery features photographs of this period in her life. It's also favourite among anglers, and at its far end is a great spot to catch the evening sun as it sets below the hills.

At the beloved holiday home of the famous and much-loved author Agatha Christie and her family you can take a glimpse into their lives. This relaxed and atmospheric house is set in the 1950s, when Agatha and her family would spend summers and Christmases here with friends, relaxing by the river, playing croquet and clock golf, and reading her latest mystery to their guests. The family were great collectors, and the house is filled with archaeology, Tunbridgeware, silver, botanical china and books. In the garden a large and romantic woodland drifts down the hillside towards the sparkling Dart estuary. The walled gardens are home to a restored peach house and vinery, as well as an allotment cared for by local school children. A visit to Greenway isn't complete without seeing the Boathouse, scene of the crime in 'Dead Man’s Folly', and the battery complete with cannon.
