Text of the information board on the preaching chair (part 2) STORY: The preaching chair is a triangulation point of the 1st order (measuring point of highest accuracy). In the 17th century, the priest Georg Matthäus Vischer was one of the first map makers to draw the country on the basis of his travels. In the years 1669 and 1670 Vischer made the first map of our federal state as the "Geographus of the Lower Austrian Estates. One hundred years later, with the support of Maria Theresa and her husband, the commission to survey Austria was carried out. The Jesuit Father Josef Liesgang made possible through his triangulation assessment ( In the years 1865, 1867, 1873, 1891 and 1897, exclusively military triangulations were carried out at the Predigstuhl, with survey control and degree measurements as well as astronomical measurements. 1921, three years after the end of the First World War a border triangulation was carried out at the Predigstuhl, whereby the landmark from 1897 was also found. Text of the information board on the preaching chair (1st part) The Predigstuhl (718 m) The area of our home district is a plateau 450 to 550 meters high. Three mountain ranges are built on it, which run almost parallel from south to north. The main train divides the district into two roughly equal parts. It enters the district north of Weinpolz, reaches the highest point in the Predigstuhl at 718 m and then flattens out towards the Thaya. The preaching chair was a popular destination for Sunday hikes in the 1930s due to the observation tower still in place at the time, popularly known as the pyramid. A wooden pillar of this pyramid was anchored in the ground exactly at this point. The hikers from Groß Siegharts, Dietmanns, Waidhofen and the surrounding towns enjoyed the view to Schneeberg and Ötscher at the destination of this hike in clear weather. Today this view is prevented by the tall trees. Instead, the silhouette of the Dukovany nuclear power plant can be seen as a rather oppressive distant view in a northerly direction. The Predigtstuhl is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. At 718 meters, it is the highest point in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district. In the 1930s there was a lookout tower, of which there are only a few anchorage holes. The Aussichsturm was popularly called "pyramid". I can still remember when I was a child and my father said "Gemma on Piramidn" everyone knew that the sermon chair was meant. I doubt whether anyone still associates the term "pyramid" with the sermon chair today. Small excursions into the forest around the Predigtstuhl are definitely worth it. There are lots of big and small festivals to discover. A sign saying "View of the Dukovany nuclear power plant" is still available, but the view of the nuclear power plant should have been blocked by the tall trees for a few years. I tried to find the view a few times last year, but failed (Dukovany is only 65 km from Waidhofen an der Thaya). In this sense: "Gemma on Piramidn!" Supplement May 2020: I am afraid that the sermon chair will no longer look the way it looks now. A few years ago, we could still use signatures to prevent it being cleared to make room for wind turbines. Now the bark beetles are there - and no signature will help. Deforestation is already beginning. I hope that at least the giant beeches will survive - the beeches that were huge 60 years ago when I was little!
