Lilienfeld Abbey is an important Cistercian monastery in Lower Austria and the largest medieval monastery in Austria. It was founded in 1202 by Leopold VI and impresses with its Gothic architecture. The monastery church is one of the largest Gothic churches in Austria with magnificent stained glass windows and an impressive high altar. The abbey is located in the Traisental, at the foot of the Muckenkogel, surrounded by an idyllic natural landscape. The Göttweig and Lilienfeld monasteries were the largest landowners. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was a private parish of the Lords of Hohenberg and served as the church for Lilienfeld until around 1220.
