The only road access to Mersea so make sure you don't spend too long on the island if the tide has started to turn or you could have a long wait to leave again.

The Sustrans route here is over quite rough ground and may not be suitable for wider bikes. The sign says " no motorised vehicles", not sure if that applies to ebikes. If you are unsure stick to the road route which is usually quiet.

Only impassable a few times per year but you can get stuck for an hour or more when it is. Watch out for high tide over about 5.3m for likely trouble.

The nice part is that Tiptree is widely available across Europe, so you can easily refresh your holiday feelings at home later thinking back the tea & scones enjoyed here.

Enter via the Metal swing gate, gravel path to start changing to grass which winds through the trees eventually coming out near the visitors centre

The River Colne flows through Colchester and the Essex countryside on its way to the sea. There's a nice riverside path which is great for cycling. The river runs 39 miles (62 km) in total.
