After rain this is even more impressive

Check before you go as it’s not always overflowing. Lots of beautiful circular walks ranging from 3 miles to 22 miles.

Valehouse Reservoir is a serene location, perfect for those seeking a quiet walk or a moment of reflection. The surrounding landscape provides beautiful views, and the reservoir itself is a haven for wildlife. The reservoir, along with the nearby Bottoms Reservoir, plays a vital role in the water supply for the surrounding areas, this is part of the Longdendale Chain of reservoirs. It is worth noting that the reservoirs were constructed in the 19th century, reflecting the industrial growth of the region and the need for reliable water resources.

The surrounding woodland and moorland offer diverse landscapes, changing beautifully with the seasons. The dam wall itself is an impressive feat of engineering, and walking across it provides great views of the reservoir and surrounding countryside.

Approach the base of the Derwent Dam from Fairholmes car park and walk across the open field to get up close and personal with the overflowing torrent of white water. It’s a spectacular sight and the noise is incredible. Feel the mist generated by the cascade on your face. Wonderful viewpoint for photographs!

The embankment of Langsett Reservoir is 352m/1, 156ft long and has a depth of 35m/117ft, to the old river bed beneath. When full, the reservoir holds 59 million m3 or 1,409 million gallons of water. The castellated valvehouse at the northern end of the dam wall is supposed to have been modelled on the gatehouse of Lancaster Castle. The reservoir took 14 years to build, between 1889 and 1904. The reservoir is now controlled by Yorkshire Water, and its naturally acidic, brown water is treated at the modern Langsett Treatment Works just below the embankment wall to the right.

This lovely section of gravel takes you along Derwent and Howden reservoirs and ascends to Slippery Stones. It links with the gravel trail around Ladybower to the south and then onto the MTB classic Cut Gate in the north. The scenery is spellbinding along this section and beyond.

Car Parking is available along the Northern shoreline of the reservoir or at the Trans Pennine Trail Car Park in Hadfield. You could also use the Car Parks at Crowden or Torside

Derwent dam built in 1902 is fabulously located, being surrounded by majestic moorland, peaceful forests, rolling farmland and rugged hills - not to forget the Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs. During the Second World War, the reservoir was used by pilots to practise for the ‘Dam Busters’ raids, due to its similarity to the lakes and dams of Germany.

A spectacular but unusual dam in that the water is allowed to cascade over the top of the dam when it's full, rather than via side channels. It was constructed of millstone, which was quarried some 8 miles away at Bole Hill Quarry rather than earth embankments as most reservoirs have. The dam is also famous for being where the 617 Squadron practiced for the Dambusters Raid due to its similarity to German dams.

Langsett Reservoir is a lovely place to walk around and is moderate loop with great views across the reservoir. You can also use this as a base to explore longer walks in the Peak District. There is a free car park with toilets available but this does get quite busy. There is also a nice cafe and pub close to the parking area.
