Pretty little place with wonderful valley views

A place like something out of a picture book.

The legendary mountaineering village of Heiligenblut is probably one of the most beautiful in the entire Alpine region. It lies at an altitude of almost 1300 meters in a picturesque mountain landscape, with a unique natural backdrop, in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Guarded by the mighty peak of the Grossglockner (3798 meters), the highest mountain in Austria, Heiligenblut is the southern entrance to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

Like the Gössnitzfall, the impressive moor can be reached on the Natura Mystica adventure trail, which begins in Winkl an der Möll in the west of Heiligenblut. There is interesting information about natural phenomena along the way.

The figure on the outer facade of the church in Heiligenblut - reaching from the floor to the roof - is that of Saint CHRISTOPHERUS. The Latin name means "Christ-bearer", and that is exactly how he is always depicted: as a giant carrying a child (Jesus, the Christ) across a river. In the Middle Ages it was popular belief that if you had seen Christopher, you would not suffer an unprepared death that day. Therefore, the external façade with his portrait, which is visible from afar, was certainly very valued in the village.
