The concrete outlet tower serves as the central control point for the reservoir's water supply. Connected by a bridge to the main dam, the tower houses sluice gates and valves that regulate the flow and distribution of water to the River Chew and the local water supply.

Wear clothes to cover your legs, parts are quite overgrown with nettles. (end May 2024)

Chew Valley Lake is the 5th largest artificial lake in the UK. It was constructed in the 1950s to supply drinking water for Bristol and the nearby area. There are brilliant views of the lake and surrounding countryside as you pass along the dam.

Nice traffic free route with lots of places to stop for refreshments along the way. Recommend the bakery at Winscombe. Sadly, the numerous bike gates along the route are a pain if you're on a mountain/hybrid bike as they are too narrow.

Take the climb up the back of Portbury or Caswell hill and enjoy the descent down as a reward. As a climb it's got a sort of alpine feel, and while it's never really steep it does go on a bit. Due to the traffic I much prefer this as a descent, In a similar vein to Brockley Combe but that's overall a nicer climb.

Look out for the long right bend - make sure you brake beforehand!

The Strawberry Line is a traffic-free trail between Yatton and Cheddar. The gravel path follows the route of a former railway line that once carried delicious cargos of strawberries from Cheddar. The line was well usd for nearly a century until its closure in 1965. Level and easygoing, the trail is suitable for all ages and abilities. It winds through some very pretty Somerset countryside, too.

Awesome views towards Bristol and smooth, sinuous tarmac—what’s not to love? Up or down, it’s a treat (different flavours, of course).

One of the nicest climbs around Bristol and normally not too busy!

As a cyclist and driver I cannot recommend for bikes - too much impact for motor traffic whether descending or ascending

Fabulous gravel track. As long as you're not too precious about getting grit and dirt on your bike, it's possible on any bike... smoother than most roads!

Linking Bristol to Pill, this sometimes gravelly, sometimes rooty and mucky trail runs alongside the River Avon and is perfect for riders, walkers and joggers. Take more care during peak times and beware this is usually flooded with big puddles all through the winter!

Great for refuelling! It can be quite busy though.

Great path to get to Pill / Portishead from Bristol. Scenic and flat, gets really mucky in autumn / winter - still worth it!

Lovely gravel trail along the Avon. Great views on all sides. It can get a little narrow in places, though, so take care.

You can this one hard as it flattens enough in the turns to catch your breath.

Lovely spot to stop and take pictures, very satisfying to sit and watch the sailboats in the lake!

I can't help but stop to get a picture here every time I pass, I only wish the view lasted longer! Careful of the cars as they can sometimes come haring past!

Nice offroad stretch that's pretty straight and flat so maybe not too interesting in itself, but a nice alternative to the roads if you're going somewhere. Do-able on a roadbike but probably not that enjoyable, ideal for hybrid/gravel bikes
