The concrete outlet tower serves as the central control point for the reservoir's water supply. Connected by a bridge to the main dam, the tower houses sluice gates and valves that regulate the flow and distribution of water to the River Chew and the local water supply.

Lovely but horrible road surface

Beautiful little stretch of road here, especially so during Summer.

Chew Valley Lake is the 5th largest artificial lake in the UK. It was constructed in the 1950s to supply drinking water for Bristol and the nearby area. There are brilliant views of the lake and surrounding countryside as you pass along the dam.

From Norton it's a drop to a ramp and then a reasonably long drag along a single track road with tall hedges. From Chew Magna it's a little sharper and a fair bit shorter. Either way the view is just before or after the crest of the climb.

Climbing from Woolard this long climb is firmly in the easy category but I can definitely see people stopping before the final double ramp. The initial climb to the first junction is easy enough and a bit of flat land quickly cedes to the next ramp. After the second junction there is a longer section at about 10%. I thought I'd finished the climb before rounding a corner and seeing the absolute wall at the end. On its own it wouldn't be too bad but guarantee you'll be out of the saddle for it after what came before. Climb actually crests after the left onto the A road. Turn right shortly after to continue the adventure.

Fine in winter but best in spring. A nice little reprieve after climbing one of the nasty hills round here before heading back into Bristol or the Chew Valley. Alternatively a gateway to one of my favourite spring/autumn rides, Pensford to Stantonbury Hill via Burnett. Did that ride once in winter and had to stop while a nice farmer scraped ice from the road.
