The most striking building in Berat

A real highlight

Beautiful city of 1,000 windows. If you hike up the hill on the opposite side of the river and visit the castle ruins, you'll have a great view of the old town of Berat.

Really beautiful old town

The Mangalem quarter is located in the shape of a semicircle in the southern and eastern parts of the Castle Hill in Berat. This residential complex exhibits the characteristics of a medieval urban development outside the fortification walls. Its construction phase may have begun in the 15th and 16th centuries, while the residential structures visible today were largely built in the 18th and 19th centuries and incorporate a combination of stone and wood elements.

The Gorica Bridge is one of Berat's most notable landmarks due to its unique architecture. What makes the bridge so significant is its symbolic role as a bridge of peace and connection amidst historical conflicts between different religious groups.

Berat Castle is not simply a ruin or a fortress like so many other sights of this kind. On the contrary, it is still home to a dedicated district of Berat, known in Albanian as Kalaja. The mountain was already inhabited and fortified in ancient times. Over the centuries, Berat Castle has been repeatedly remodeled or rebuilt. Its last major renovation was probably in the 13th century under Ottoman rule. It was during this period that the fortifications, of which the surrounding wall is still completely preserved, and the present-day city district within the walls, were built.
