Gorgeous views at the top!

One of the best climbs in the South West. Good road surface, nice rhythm to the gradients, one of the longest about and very quiet on traffic. Gorgeous rolling roads at the top also. Save your energy for the final stretch as it's the steepest part.

Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve is a significant wetland situated just outside of Glastonbury in Somerset. There is a very diverse array of important wildlife species in this reserve, including the great white egret, a rare and majestic bird that was once extinct in the UK but has now made a comeback thanks to the reserve's conservation efforts. If you're interested in nature and wildlife, then this is an absolute must-see if visiting the Glastonbury area.

The A frames have been replaced with gates so it's much easier for bikes to enter now.

Broad Road from Rodney Stoke at about 63m to the B3135 that goes from Priddy to the top of Cheddar Gorge at 233m.

Maybe this should be the Ebbor Gorge hill as the segment finishes at Wookey Hole but spends most of the time alongside Ebbor Gorge? Anyway, a long steady hill to climb or a fun descent but don't go too fast as the surface isn't great and the road is narrow. Stop at the car park near the top for great views over the Mendips. Or stop at Ebbor Gorge car park nearer the bottom, Ebbor Gorge is a great walk but not somewhere to take a road bike.

There are A frame barriers at both ends of the trail over the NNR. Although these are wider than the barriers at Ham Wall they may restrict larger bikes, trailers, etc. Photos of barriers uploaded.

Trail over the Ham Wall RSPB reserve, which can be busy with walkers. Note - if you've got anything much wider than a normal road bike you may struggle to get it through the A frames at the ends of the trail. The photos I've uploaded show one of the frames, with a tourer with 42cm bars for comparison. Apparently the gate at one end (west) of the trail has a RADAR lock but not the gate at the other end. Very poor accessibility.

New Road’s ascent out of Draycott (affording the route its informal name, Draycott Hill) offers a very steep but technically simple hill close to Cheddar Gorge, affording dramatic and unimpeded views of the Somerset Levels to the south. From the foot of the hill in Draycott village you can choose a quiet back route to the Gorge via Upper Draycott Lane, just a few dozen yards to the west (turn right at the bottom, then immediately right again). The crest of the climb presents an exposed welcome to the Mendip plateau, with Halesland Airfield (home of the Mendip Gliding Club) on one side and most likely an enormous number of sheep on the other! Beware if descending—it lands with a T-junction onto the A371, so check your brakes before you take the plunge!

The descent of Cheddar Gorge is one of the easiest bits of any ride, but is just reward for making it up there in the first place.
