The remains of Thetford Priory a really nice and reflective space to end a tour... or start one. Thetford really is a gravel gateway with the Peddars and Icknield way passing nearby and the Kings Forest near Brandon. The Priory is smaller than the much larger establishment at Castle Acre but still majestic. The Priory of Our Lady of Thetford was one of the largest and most important monasteries in medieval East Anglia. Founded in the early 12th century, for 400 years it was the burial place of the Earls and Dukes of Norfolk, and enjoyed their powerful protection. It was because of this that Thetford was one of the last monasteries to be suppressed when it surrendered to Henry VIII's commissioners in 1540. Great place for reenactments on Kings Lynn Heritage Day

This is an excellent traffic-free cycle path that runs along the River Great Ouse into Kings Lynn. This section traces a wide part of the Great Ouse, close to its mouth at The Wash where it drains into the North Sea. It's the longest of several British rivers called "Ouse", flowing through Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk to its source in Syresham in Northamptonshire.

Downham Market is one of Norfolk’s oldest market towns. It lies on the banks of the River Great Ouse, and dates back to Saxon times. The market place is known for its unusual and iconic black and white clock.

A great refreshment stop

Centrally located, being just a short walk from the river, the cathedral and the city centre, Cherry Hill Park is a lovely place for a shorter run or as part of a longer one around Ely. It is the best route to link the cathedral with the River Great Ouse.

Downham Market is a pretty little town on the banks of the Great Ouse. It's one of Norfolk’s oldest market towns and is known for it's unusual 19th century black and white clock and many carrstone buildings, some showing a Dutch influence. The town has many historic buildings, antique shops and lots of places to eat and drink.

Ely Porta (or Walpole Gate) was the main entrance to the monastery. The gate was completed in 1417 and is now part of King's School, a public school.
