This is the site of Skirlaugh Rail Station, which closed to passengers on May 6, 1957, but remained in use for goods traffic until November 11, 1963. The platforms are visible alongside the rail trail.

Nice views over the Humber however can get busy with dog walkers, families etc.

Super little spot for a pit-stop. Outside the old Abbey there are a few wooden benchs by a pond.

Good stopping point for lunch on your way to Hornsea.

The old railway line from Hull to Hornsea which is now repurposed as the Trans Pennine Trail. A traffic free trail where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the quintessential British countryside.

Nice spot for a rest & a bite

This path is quiet a long one which is primarily under shade. There is car parking close by and a view benches to sit down and relax.

Thornton Abbey was a medieval abbey located close to the small North Lincolnshire village of Thornton Curtis, near Ulceby, and directly south of Hull on the other side of the Humber estuary. Its ruins are a Grade I listed building, including notably England's largest and most impressive surviving monastic gatehouse

Nice rest/picnic spot. Note: as at May 2022 the ruins and gatehouse are closed for restoration. Free entry when is open.

Bullnose, St Andrew's Dock, entrance, Hull, 1982 This was the western end of those two pipes which can be seen on the opposite side of the dock entrance. In my picture they appear to descent from the heavens, but in reality they came from the first floor of the building to my left, out of site as I took the picture, then identified as 'Industrial & Maritime Riggers Limited' but formerly the former Boston Deep Sea Fisheries Ltd office and the Sea Fish Industry Authority. The Bullnose was named for its shape, jutting out in to the river at the mouth of the St Andrew's Dock entrance channel, and apparently men who had not found a place on a crew would wait there in the hope of jumping down into a trawler that was leaving shorthanded if the skipper gave them a signal they were wanted.

This is the old railway line from Hull to Hornsea, which is now the Trans Pennine Trail. You can see what I reckon are the old platforms for a station as there seem to be two lines that merge back into one.

Beautiful environment with great breeze from the Humber River

Victoria Dock, opened in 1850, was the first dock to be built to the east of the River Hull. A year after it opened, the Earle Brothers started their shipyard here. From 1853 to 1931, over 700 ships were made in their yard. In 1970, industry stopped at the docks and they were abandoned until 1987. Now, it is a bustling dock village with a private school and various shops. You can learn more about the story by following the sign-posted Victoria Dock Trail.
