The Ashbourne Tunnel runs below the town of Ashbourne itself, and serves as the begining – or, alternatively, the ending – of the Tissington Trail: a 13-mile hike, much of which comprises of disused railway lines, connecting the towns of Ashbourne and Parsley Hay. Recently renovated with speakers that transmit authentic steam-powered engine noise, Ashbourne Tunnel is a highly evocative experience that is sure to transport visitors back to the age of industry. Ashbourne was first included in the North Staffordshire Railway line in 1852, as the trade of limestone grew around the town. At the end of the 19th century, this line was taken over by the London & South Western line, who were seeking a line south of Buxton, and connected Ashbourne to the junction at Parsley Hay. This saw the construction of the Ashbourne Tunnel, which was first opened in 1899.

If you need a breather on the way round, someone has thoughtfully installed a carved wooden armchair in the middle of a field for you to rest your legs and take in the view.

The strong winds are very powerful across the dam wall. Those who cycle with children may want to use the road for the dam wall section on these occasions.

Milkshakes in Herbert's Tea Room are lovely I tried the 'Cookies and Creme' one when I was there and it was to die for! Staff are friendly, and there are a few veggie and vegan options. Quite pricey, but you can sit inside or outside with dogs. If outside there is a large tent-like shelter with fairy lights and tables, chairs, and benches. For a less expensive option, there is a snack place at the start of Tissington Trail by the car park. Toilets are clean and free but couldn't see the disabled one? You can park for free on part of the entry to the village but as it is classed as the Tissington estate it is limited to two hours only. Cyclists are considerably more polite and gentile on this trail as compared to Monsal Dale and will softly say, "On your right" before they pass by, to let you know there is a bike there or ring a bell. There's a very comical black and white village cat who stopped a car and walked in front of it to the amusement of Herbert's Cafe customers when I was there and the ducks are just as leisurely and in control as they slow down and stop traffic around the village on a whim! The candle shop was open whilst I was there (October 2022) and pricey but maybe not for handmade/artisan candles etc. The plant nursery was not open.

epic views for an epic ride. your gonna need a seat if your not used to climbs, theres a few little but leg warming climbs on the east side of the lake

this side of the lake can get hard on your legs if your out off form/out of practice - take a break at the sculpture. really good ride for both gravel bike and XC bike going around this reservoir.

really good ride experience going around carsington - the east side is packed with short climbs n downs, west side is mostly flat with refreshment stops. the main visitor centre is pricey compared to the other options
