One of the interesting features that crop up as you cycle around the woods; this informational tree sculpture is near ‘The Clearing’ at a crossroads of trails and hills. The ‘data’ mentions various local or historical events and people and points towards those locations.

Eynsford Ford reflects the traditional way used to cross a stream or small river, via a shallow point. It was an important crossing back in Roman times.

Fantastic technical hills, tracks and trails in and around Abbey and adjacent Bostal Wood. Lesnes Abbey ruins at the bottom of the hills. Wooden sculptures and art.

Data Tree’ is an Artwork made by the local community. The objects: The Monk is a direct reference to those who founded and worked at the Abbey at Lesnes. The Seal shows that there is a healthy and diverse wildlife thriving in the estuary adjacent to the woods. The Cog refers to the powerful industry that spread into the Estuary as London expanded, particularly the pumping station at Crossness. The Pike is taken from the crest for Lesnes Abbey. The Shark's Tooth- These are taken in large amounts from the fossil pits in the woods… something quite unique to Lesnes The Heart of Roseia de Dover still lies at the Abbey. She grew up at the Abbey and wished to return after her death. The Rowing Boat is a reference to the importance of water transport throughout the history of Lesnes and the Estuary. The Texts: The woods are bursting with wild mushrooms. Boletus Edulis is know is the most delicious of all edible mushrooms. The students at Peareswood school felt that the wood united generations and wanted the word ‘Family’ to celebrate this. Kate Bush attended Abbey Wood School and it is said she enjoyed walking in the woods, perhaps inspiring her song, ‘Wuthering Heights’. The numbers- TQ4790078813 are a map reference for the exact spot where the sculpture stands. Belvedere is an area adjacent to the woods and is home to many people who frequent its environs.

Lullingstone Country Park is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The park is home to diverse flora and fauna and features trails that wind through ancient woodlands and grasslands. As well as this, it's home to Lullingstone Castle, a historic manor house with a unique World Garden. This garden showcases plants from around the globe and is a testament to the adventurous spirit of the owners who collected them.

It's one of my favourite routes. Rode up it last week without encountering a single moving vehicle. Currently the sweetcorn crop in the fields which line much of the road is fairly high and obscures some of the view of the road ahead in places; great time to ride this route for best visibility is early Spring and during Autumn; also great in Winter on days when roads aren't slippery.
