There are always a lot of them hanging around here.

They are landless, living on makeshift boats, subsisting on fishing with weirs and outrigger nets. When the land isn't flooded, they also practice modest agriculture along the riverbanks. Where the banks are higher, they have small huts. Everywhere there is bustling activity in the boats and huts; everyone is neatly dressed, and some of the huts and boats are real gems. The children wave cheerfully at us as our longboat, its outboard motor roaring, maneuvers through the shallow water.

The South Gate of Angkor Thom is the most famous of the five gates to the imperial capital founded by Jayavarman VII at the end of the 12th century. It lies on the central north-south axis connecting Angkor Wat with the Bayon and is reached via a stone bridge adorned with monumental sculptures.

Angkor Wat, a monument steeped in history, is Cambodia's most important landmark. It's no coincidence that the temple, with its distinctive five towers reminiscent of lotus blossoms, is depicted in many places, such as on the Cambodian riel banknotes and the official national flag. Furthermore, as a cultural asset of Cambodia, Angkor Wat has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Angkor means "city" and Wat means "temple," literally translating to "city temple." Some sources suggest that the term "Vat" is of Thai origin and means "monastery."

Each of the 54 towers is adorned with the four faces of Avalokiteshvara (Buddha of Compassion). These large heads all gaze in different compass directions, radiating power and control with a hint of pity or compassion – a perfect mix to describe this realm.
