Being here three times in the nice weather, I consider this a place where you can reset yourself after your daily routine or others, where you can sit and listen to the seagulls and the geese and any other sound. In the evening the sunset was so astonishing during the summer. I understood the place was becoming muddy after a few days of rain.

Not very visible from the road, hidden behind a tall brick wall. You can peep through the old gateway or else from the driveway at the far left of the wall.

Like many nature reserves in England, Godmanchester Nature Reserve was once gravel pits. The peaceful nature could not be further away from its industrial history. Keep an eye out for songbirds, ducks, geese, kingfishers and overwintering wildfowl as you run through.

A mill has stood here for nearly 1000 years. Houghton Mill is the final working watermill on the River Great Ouse. The mill is in the care of the National Trust and is open to the public (entrance fee applies). Please see their website for more details https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/cambridgeshire/houghton-mill-and-waterclose-meadows

Buckden Towers, comprising the Great Tower, walls and grounds, are all that remains of Buckden Palace which dates from 1479. The site of the Palace is over 900 years old and was identified in the Domesday Book of 1086 as belonging to the Bishop of Lincoln. Historically, Buckden has played an unhappy role. Henry VIII's first wife Katherine of Aragon was locked up here for not producing a male heir. A few years after Katherine's death Henry, took his fifth wife, Catherine Howard there to escape the plague in London. However, it was during their stay at Buckden that Henry accused his new young wife of adultery with Thomas Culpeper, eventually leading to her execution. Buckden Towers are privately owned and have conference room and retreat facilities, self-catering apartments and a tea-room.

The path through the mill connects you across the Great Ouse between Houghton and the Hemingfords but it’s a National Trust property and is often busy with visitors so you might need to inch along patiently.

I would agree with Dom. About 9 miles round the loop. Relatively challenging for an intermediate or beginner. Mixture of gravel, mud and road surfaces. Beautiful scenes of the reservoir. When hot, just expect swarms of midges in some parts of the track. Great to also have Rutland Cycling there too along with 2 coffee shops. Well worth going for the parking pass if you are considering regular visits, £50 a year.

Godmanchester Nature Reserve is a superb place for a walk, not far from the market town of Huntingdon. As with many other reserves along the Great River Ouse, it occupies the site of a former gravel pit and comprises four lakes with areas of grassland and hedgerows. As well as songbirds, ducks, geese, kingfishers and overwintering wildfowl, the reserve is also notable for its Roman heritage. Roman Lake was the site of a Roman well, discovered during quarrying work in the 1980s.
