The Co-op has a cafe inside so you can get a coffee or a bacon roll. Unsurprisingly, there's no bike parking so it's more a place to grab something than stop.

Lovely flowing descent with some sweeping corners on smooth new tarmac. Great fun to lean into at speed.

Fine for commuters and tourers but too narrow in places to ride at any speed as well as taking you in front of blind driveway entrances as you near Histon. Also gets covered with debris scattered by cars from the adjacent road, so greater puncture risk. Road cyclists are better off sticking to the road.

A wide mixed-use bike path connects Cottenham and Impington

The cycleway passes between a series of scenic lakes formed from old sand and gravel quarries, now a nature reserve. The path is often flooded and unpassable for road bikes between autumn and spring though.

The tarmac cycle lane runs parallel to the bus-way, both providing an excellent link between Huntingdon and Cambridge. Cycle-parks at each major bus stop.

St Ives Bridge is a 15th-century bridge crossing the River Great Ouse. It is noted for being one of only four bridges in England to incorporate a chapel, the monks never being one to miss an opportunity to make money, the chapel doubled up as a toll-house. Safe passage is no longer charged for on this bridge.

Huge views south across the fens while following the ridge between Haddenham and Wilburton. On a clear day you can make out the Balsham wind turbines some 25km distant.

Current opening times are 10-2pm. Very friendly though: even though I got there at 2:45, the door was still open and they sold me a cold drink and topped up my water bottle.
