Komoot recommends this hike; so do I. There are quite a few twists and turns on this route, but it passes by quite a few interesting places, such as the Lever Bridge, the Japanese garden, the Pigeon Tower and the Rivington Pike, apart from the lovely scenery and remnants of Lever’s old bungalow.

Great place for a pit stop

The original medieval Liverpool Castle stood in Liverpool near the waterfront, which is about 22 miles southwest of Rivington, but it had been demolished in the 1720s. The currently-existing structure named Liverpool Castle is a scaled replica that was commissioned by Lord Leverhulme. Work started in 1912 and continued until Lord Leverhulme’s death in 1925. Relatively few people had been assigned to the construction of the building, so the structure was not quite finished, although the folly was supposed to look like the ruins of a castle anyway. In the years since Lord Leverhulme’s death, the area Castle, fell into disrepair. Weeds started growing on the castle’s masonry, people vandalized the walls, and a spiral staircase within the castle collapsed in the early 1980s. Liverpool Castle is still slowly crumbling, transforming from a folly meant to imitate the ruins of a castle into actual ruins.

A quaint little coffee and cake stop at the edge of some great riding and hiking.

Great view of the valley. Very busy with cars coming up the road getting to the Pike. They don’t often have vegan stock, so don’t count on them to refuel halfway. There’s a resident dog that is friendly, loves to come up to dogs on lead, if your dog is reactive on lead keep them away. Resident dog is free roaming.

Challenging little climb with some kicks - proper British - short and steep. Good lookout at the top:)

The engineer for the Rivington reservoirs was Thomas Hawksley and construction for the Liverpool Corporation Waterworks took place between 1852 and 1857. The Lower Rivington reservoir has two dams - the Millstone Embankment, which is 2,120 feet (646 m) long and 40-foot (12.2 m) high, and the Horwich Embankment, which is 1,660 feet (506 m) long and 61-foot (18.6 m) high. Filter beds were constructed at the foot of the Horwich Embankment, The original sand filters were replaced by a new treatment plant from where a pipeline runs to the service reservoirs at Eccleston, St Helens.
