Rivington Pike at 362m is a very popular summit for runners and walkers. The trails up through the terraced gardens are a lot of fun to run and you can extend the loop by taking in Winter Hill. Get up early or take a head torch and run in the evening to avoid the crowds although it's quite fun running up past them at any time. The tower was built in 1733 on the site of the ancient beacon. It was a hunting lodge but when restored none of the internal features where kept and the door and windows have been blocked.

Winter Hill Air Disaster Plaque On 27 February 1958, a Silver City Bristol 170 Freighter (G-AICS) travelling from the Isle of Man to Manchester crashed into Winter Hill (also known as Rivington Moor) several hundred yards away from the mast. Thirty-five people died and 7 were injured. The tragic event is commemorated by this simple memorial fixed to the side of the transmitting station. It reads: IN MEMORY OF ALL WHO LOST THEIR LIVES AT THE WINTER HILL AIR DISASTER 27th FEBRUARY 1958. AND WITH GRATEFUL THANKS TO THE PEOPLE OF HORWICH AND BOLTON FOR THEIR MAGNIFICENT SUPPORT. ERECTED BY HIS WORSHIP THE MAYR OF DOUGLAS ISLE OF MAN. F.KENNISH (SURVIVOR) AND THE SURVIVORS, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF ALL WHO DIED. “SOMEWHERE AROUND THE CORNER ALL IS WELL”

On the edge of the summit of Noon Hill stands a Bronze Age burial cairn. Measuring some twenty-one metres in diameter, it is bounded by a stone kerb which encircles a mound. A cremated burial sat at the heart of the structure, and wooden posts were driven into the monument, encircling its stony core. Earth was heaped up into the space between the central stony heart and the surrounding kerb. The soil placed in there had once been the ground where people had sat, chipping flint tools. Further cremations and grave goods were dug into the cairn during the Bronze Age and perhaps people processed up to it on special days, to honour their dead ancestors. After the Bronze Age passed, the remains of those that lay there were lost from memory, and it rested undisturbed for three and a half thousand years

Built on what is thought to be an Anglo-Saxon site, "Two Lads" was constructed over a period of nearly two years by Robin Smith. The two cairns commemorate the tragic death of two young men who, legend has it, perished on the site many hundreds of years ago.The spot, which provides a panoramic view of Bolton, Rivington Pike and the transmitter mast is used by ramblers and runners as a navigation point and is a favourite resting spot for visitors who pass nearby.

Well worth the climb for the views and ride back down!

Walking boots and a wind proof jackets are a wise choice as it is quite open to windy wet weather. The hill has so many stories /history from mystery murder too plan crashes, also home to local tv mast is on this hill.

Climb up the path that winds round the side, quite steep but easier than trying to ride up the proper descent. Views are pretty decent on a good day. Does get quite busy, especially at weekends. If you hit the descent from the top be sure to check your line choice first, there’s some little drops that can catch you out. Generally quite rutty at the bottom. Great fun though and decent views.

On a clear day this is one of the best views in England.

Built in 1733 from the remains of a beacon platform and pit and from local stone from the River Douglas and wood from the surrounding hills, Grade 2 listed Rivington Pike Tower was formerly used as a hunting lodge by Squire John Andrews, sheltering shooting parties out on a jolly from Rivington Hall. After decades of disrepair and vandalism the castellated top has been renovated, the roof and chimney replaced, and the door and windows bricked up. Inside, and now unable to be seen, are a fireplace and a small stone-flagged cellar. Due to erosion the doorway now stands a good forty inches above the soil rendering the Tower’s foundations clearly visible

Get there early if you want a crowd free summit, it gets quite busy up there.

From Rivington Pike care is needed on the way down.Drop offs deeper than your average, also deep ruts.On the way up there’s a number of routes forbidden for bikes, even though the Komoot ride I followed said they were ok.Winter hill has a section closed to cars and bikes for some reason.Lovely place nevertheless, although a bit frustrating for the above reasons

On the way down, don't forget to call at one of the Saxon Barns for a much needed meal or drink. The Higher Barn is over 2000 years old and worth a visit. Check times of opening.
