Park at Rhyslyn and use the cycleway to Afan trails as a useful warm up before hitting the climb or Penhydd or Y Wal

Easy walking along the Eastern and Southern edges of the reservoir, courtesy of the Gower Way (a 35-mile path linking Penller Castell to Rhossili if you fancy stretching your legs a little further). Fantastic views.

Along Swansea's seafront, there is a wonderful bike path that traces Swansea Bay. With fantastic views across the bay, the traffic-free path leads 5.8 miles (9.3 km) between the Observatory and Mumbles Head. The path passes plenty of cafes, restaurants and pubs if you get thirsty or hungry along the way.

Cyclists need to be aware of vehicles and walkers using the road between the Lower and Upper reservoir.

The lower reservoir is not suitable to go around. There are steep steps at one end.

Heading east to west on the B4287 from Pontrhydyfen to Neath, Sardis Hill kicks up from the junction with Ton Mawr Road and within a hundred metres hits around 14%. The pitch of the slope is further accentuated by the tall brick walls either side which are remnants of an abandoned railway bridge. Continuing to rise harshly past a couple of houses it’s not too long before you reach the gentle middle section. Take the chance to catch your breath here as before you know it the second ramp arrives to take you to the top. Longer than the first hard stretch but not quite as steep it begins abruptly then fades as you approach the summit. Passing over a small bridge, the trees either side recede and the houses of Cimla begin before you arrive at the top at the small crossroads.

A lot of people cycle NCN 887 from Port Talbot to Glyncorrwg (of which Afan Argoed is a part), but not many go beyond that. 887 continues up the mountain, and eventually meets 47. You can even keep going all the way to the A4061, follow that North until it joins NCN 46 , then 47 and 4 all the way back to Port talbot. It's a great round trip, with great views. If you like mountains, another good one is again up the NCN 887, but at Cymmer, go on to Blaegwynfi, and continue over the mountain, dropping down into one of the Rhondda valleys (hitting Treorchi). Head north, and you'll end up again on the A4061 as before. Great views again.

The towpath that runs along the Swansea Canal is a gorgeous leafy stretch that makes for great access to the city from the north avoiding the roads and traffic. You can either walk or cycle on the towpath, which occasionally switches over the river on a series of narrow bridges. Do take care if you're on a bike as there's often runners, walkers, children and dogs also using the shared path.

You can cycle/portaqe your bike round the reservoir, through the forest and on to the Rhyd y Pandy Road that runs across the moor if you have a mountain or gravel bike.

About two miles up from here is Afan Argoed Visitors Centre, great cafe, mountain bike hire and bike shop. Vegan and vegetarian options. Busy.
