4月 23, 2025, End of the Peddars Way
Many a wild camp taken place here I would imagine

3月 4, 2025, St Andrew's Church, North Pickenham
The pretty village of North Pickenham lies on the route of the Peddars Way long-distance trail. The impressive St Andrew's Church is worth a look, while the nearby Grade I listed St Mary's Church has murals that date back to the 11th century. St Mary's is a remnant of the deserted medieval village of Houghton on the Hill.

9月 23, 2024, Great Walsingham Ford
The Westgate road crosses the River Stiffkey at Great Walsingham ford. There is a footbridge for pedestrians or cyclists who would rather push.

9月 13, 2024, West Acre Priory Gatehouse
This is the gatehouse for an old Priory not far from Castle Rising, now part of private drive with no through traffic for bikes.

9月 11, 2024, Castle Acre Bailey Gate
The fantastic bailey gate here reminds me of a similar specimen I saw in Belgium at Veurne. Not far from here is the Red Lion Hostel which is run by a 90 year old lady called Alison, wonderful place to stay if you get the chance.

All that remains of West Acre Priory, now an imposing entrance to a private driveway.

8月 4, 2024, Castle Acre Bailey Gate
Superb former small medieval town, now just a village, but with scenic streets and buildings, a medieval gatehouse, castle and priory (all now ruined), as well as a very nice cafe and pub.

Twisting streets? ✅ Quaint old buildings? ✅ Cafes and gift shops? ✅ Monks wandering around in habits and shops selling statues of the Virgin Mary? ✅ A slightly different take on your usual North Norfolk tourist town.

9月 10, 2023, Castle Acre Bailey Gate
If you are coming from South Acre heading up to High Street, you need to pass through the gate to get to the castle ruins. I missed them on my direct route to the Peddar's Way (northbound).

9月 3, 2023, Walsingham Village Centre
Little Walsingham is the location for the Abbey Grounds and the Anglican Shrine, two of the most popular destinations for visitors. Walsingham sits in the Norfolk countryside, just four miles in from the north Norfolk coast, directly south of Wells-next-the-Sea. Historical records of the village go back to Saxon times when the village was first established on the banks of the River Stiffkey — it is listed in the Domesday Book under the name of Walsingham Parva. Today’s village incorporates both Little and Great Walsingham, together representing a population of about 800 people. This rural village, is surrounded by rich farmland producing corn and sugar beet, wheat and barley, fruit and vegetables — and good grazing for livestock. Many of the farms have been in the same (https://www.visitnorthnorfolk.com/information/product-catch-all/little-walsingham-p1524571) The octagonal building in Common Place is the old Town Pump House. On the stone roof is 'The Beacon'. The pump house was built c1550 and has a brazier on top, which is lit at times of special celebration.

1月 14, 2023, View of Castle Acre Priory
Castle Acre Priory is open to the public through the care of English Heritage. It is well worth paying to go in, but if you aren't able to, there is a sneaky view of the impressive priory ruins from here. It dates back to Norman times and was built by William de Warenne, the 2nd Earl of Surrey, in 1089. It was home to the first Cluniac monks in England and unlike some other English monasteries, the ruins are still intact in many places.

1月 13, 2023, Old Hunstanton Lighthouse
Now self catering accommodation, the lighthouse at Old Hunstanton sits atop the highest point of Hunstanton Cliffs and was used to guide ships into The Wash. Built in 1840 to replace a previous structure from the 17th century. Before the lighthouses, it is thought that a light was displayed in St Edmund's Chapel, the ruins of which are next door.
