9月 12, 2024, Bronze Age Barrows on Harpley Common

Beautiful examples of Barrow's that have survived quite well mainly due to how flat the landscape is here. They stand proud of the landscape and are particularaly atmospheric at dusk.

Impressive landmark on the northern approach to Hunstanton.

Sitting near the route of the old Peddars Way trackway. Amazing to think that these barrows have seen the Romans, Angles, Vikings and Normans all go by, standing inviolable and immutable.

Impressive country house set in enormous landscaped grounds, with free through-access for cycles. The cricket pitch on the north lawn by the house and lake must have one of the best settings in the country!

We entered from the South Gate towards the Obelisk. The main gate was shut and we thought we would have to go around. But the main gain has a pedestrian gate to the side which is unlocked

Now self catering accommodation, the lighthouse at Old Hunstanton sits atop the highest point of Hunstanton Cliffs and was used to guide ships into The Wash. Built in 1840 to replace a previous structure from the 17th century. Before the lighthouses, it is thought that a light was displayed in St Edmund's Chapel, the ruins of which are next door.

An 18th century stately home, Holkham Hall is set in beautiful grounds which are free to visit. When the house was built the estate was an empty space but the planting of a multitude of trees has created the woodland park you can see today. The house remains the home of the Earls of Leicester of Holkham but is open to the public on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays. For further details see the website https://www.holkham.co.uk/

You can freely roam the grounds of Holkham Hall. The grounds are home to deer and other wildlife. On certain days you can even visit the Hall.

The Old Hunstanton Lighthouse is a truly iconic building on the cliffs between Hunstanton and Old Hunstanton. The current lighthouse was built in 1840, however, there has been a lighthouse on the site since 1665. The lighthouse isn't open to the public but makes for a rather memorable holiday let accommodation. More details: norfolkcoastholidaycottages.co.uk/the-lighthouse-old-hunstanton

A cluster of Bronze age burial mounds / barrows on Harpley Common. Some are around 3m high. Pottery, bone and charcoal fragments were discovered when Bell Barrow was excavated. Local tradition has it that treasure is buried here and it is said that rabbits will not burrow in it, or if they do they soon come out! Strangely enough there are very few rabbit burrows. Please don't dig for treasure here, as it's protected as a national monument.

The chapel, now in ruins, was erected in 1272 in memory of St Edmund who landed at Hunstanton in 855 to be crowned King of East Anglia. He led an army against Viking invaders but was defeated, captured and martyred. He became the first patron saint of England.

18th-century Holkham Hall is one of the most magnificent stately homes in Norfolk, if not the whole of East Anglia. Best of all for cyclists, you can ride for free through the grounds, with great views of the house itself, plus deer park, Ice House, and the tall obelisk en route to the South Gate (where our route continues around east toward Wighton and back to Wells-next-the-Sea). They also hire bikes at Holkham Hall, so you could alternatively start and end the ride from here.

Chapel The chapel was built in 1272 in memorial to a martyred king of East Anglicans and one time patron saint of England. St Edmund and Hunstanton Edmund was born into the Wuffing (old english wolf) family he spent his youth in Saxony. It is said that he returned just below the Hunstanton cliffs in 855AD. Shortly afterwards he became king at the age of 14. After a battle with Vikings at Thetford he refused to give up his Christian religion, live under Dane Law and thus was martyred. Legend has it his supporters sought the location of his head to reunite with the body. They heard a voice calling and discovered a wolf with the kings head unharmed.

Stately home with grounds that comprise rolling parkland with a network of largely traffic free roads.

Sandringham is a fantastic place to start and finish a riding tour in the local area. Great cheese scones at the cafe, and the House and grounds are also well worth a look (just be aware that there aren't great bike parking facilities). If you have time, poke your head into the church with its solid silver altar and pulpit!

A famous royal getaway, Sandringham House has served as a private home for royals since 1862 and remains the Queen's favourite country retreat. Surrounded by 20,000 acres of manicured gardens, green parks and woodlands, the beautiful estate has been open to the public since 1977. About the estate, George V once said "dear old Sandringham, the place I love better than anywhere else in the world." George V and VI both died in the house. It's easy to see why the place was so dear to them. You can visit the house, museum and gardens from April to mid-October from 11am until 5pm. Tickets cost £17.50 for adults. You can find more information, here: https://sandringhamestate.co.uk/

Occupied by Royals since 1862 and home to four generations, Sandringham is now the Norfolk retreat for the Queen. Luckily the Estate is open for tourists and locals alike, with a visitor centre, cafe, house and gardens.

The current lighthouse was built in 1840. However, there has been a lighthouse on the site since 1665; the first built of wood with an iron basket of burning coals as a light.
