Wolfscote Dale is apparently the area in which the last wild wolf in England was killed in the 15th Century

Rocky path and fallen trees. Hard going when wet

Challenging, narrow, rough and gnarly hike over slippery limestone rocks & stones and through patches of scratchy hawthorns. Like horizontal mountaineering, this section of Monk's Dale is the wild sibling of the other Limestone Dales in the area

They used to refer to Matlock Bath as an inland holiday resort. It's even got cable cars.

Don’t be fooled by the photo. The next mile and a half through the Dale is very challenging, rocky and with a number of fallen trees to negotiate.

One of the nicest segments of the walk along the river and definitely great for kids. The stones are less slippery than they look, but still be careful not to get wet feet.

Quiet, peaceful. Quite rocky underfoot. Definitely worth walking through.

Wolfscote Dale is an idyllic limestone dale, close to Hartington. The crystalline River Dove flows through the heart of this steep-sided dale, which has dramatic screes, cliffs and caves towering above it. The wildflower meadows beside the river are the perfect place to stop for a moment and take it all in. While equally beautiful, Wolfscote is usually quieter than nearby Dovedale.

Wolfscote Dale is an attractive limestone dale. It's quieter than Dovedale but just as attractive. The caves in the limestone at the start of our walk in Wolfscote Dale could at one time been the home of one of the many wolves that are reputed to have lived in the dale. Nestled in the scenic gorge of the River Derwent, Matlock Bath is a charming village. It was in its prime during Victorian times, when its spa waters and scenery made it one of Britain's first tourist destinations. Lord Byron even went as far as to call it ‘Little Switzerland’ – just don't tell Shropshire's Church Stretton! The village is still a popular place to visit, with some lovely walks in the surrounding hills, such as High Tor and the Heights of Abraham. There are plenty of accommodation options and places to eat and drink.

Very Busy in the summer and not many places to lock yours bike. plus side lots of shops and toilets (cost 20p)
