The "Twelve Weirs" on the River Lathkill are a series of small dams constructed during the Victorian era, primarily for trout fishing purposes. Based on an aqueduct seen by the Sixth Duke of Devonshire at Wilhelmshohe, near Kassel. Roughly squared sandstone, of drystone construction. Impressively sited on the hillside. Four immensely tall round-arches, ending abruptly in a waterfall.

The River Lathkill is a winterbourne stream, it dries up over the summer. The Victorian's valued the clear water and excellent trout, so they built a series of weirs to trap the water and provide good fishing. There is a footpath through the woods on the north side of the river, allowing access and viewing of the weirs.

The Lathkill flows entirely over limestone, and as such used to become dry in the summer and during periods of low rain. The Victorians prized the river for its clarity and trout fishing, so they built 12 weirs to hold the water and maintain the fishing.

Monsal Dale Weir is a classic picturesque Peak District location. Watch water tumble down the different tiers into a serene rocky pool below.

Sometimes there are cattle in this part of the walk, so maybe dogs on leads if they're a bit excitable

The weir itself is now fenced-off to prevent public access. You can still admire the weir from the footpath, however, and gain access to the river a short step downstream.

Fantastic multi element waterfall. The more recent rain the more spectacular.

Fantastic place for a pit stop. It’s actually a weir but who cares, it looks great.

I just did this walk today....please please be carefull. Further on in the walk I got stuck halfway up a hill side in wood. Just before I lost the path and had to carefull make a descent to the road, there was a sign post, go upto Sheldon or down at this point

This route drops down the valley and back up again to a on street parking spot, lovely hillside walk through mainly woodland area. Just a few mins from Chatsworth but very quiet, away from the crowds.
