Lovely road, steady climb, quiet.

Archetypal English village with its large village green surrounded by pretty stone houses and two pubs. The open beck runs in front of the houses in Eastgate, each with their own private bridge. The banks of the stream are planted with flowers. Howden is a market and minster town in the Vale of York, characterised by the impressive arch of the Minster's ruined chancel and the St Peter's Church.

A beautifully decorated 14th century ruin of a chancel and chapel house. The minster church is still operational. The ruin is looked after by English Heritage, but free to enter and view.

Very bike friendly with bike racks out front. Indoor and outdoor seating. Tea, coffees, soup and cakes. No sandwiches. Open 11am -4pm on Saturdays (as at May 2023).

The Yorkshire Wolds Way passes close by to here and there are are plenty of wide open fields, resplendent in bright yellow rapeseed in the spring, to enjoy.

The road between the A1079 in the north and North Newbald passes through some great scenery of the Newbald Wold.

Market Weighton is a rural town with a bustling high street and plenty to offer the thirsty, hungry cyclist by way of cafes and pubs. William Bradley is Market Weighton's most famous resident. Although born in 1787 he remains Britain's tallest ever man at 7ft 9 inches tall and weighing 27 stone. There is a statue of Bradley in the town and his giant chair still sits in the Londesborough Arms.

North Newbald is a 'typical' village with a village green and pubs at its centre. Ings Beck flows in front of village houses which makes it even more picturesque. It is a popular place for walkers as the Yorkshire Wolds Way passes nearby. On the village green you will see the Whipping Stone. Legend has it a man was whipped to death here but it is more likely to be the base of the old market cross. Newbald stone was used to build parts of York as well as St Mary's and the Minster in Beverley. The quarry is long since depleted.

This is a glorious road that winds between Millington and Huggate. It makes for a great climb or a great descent whichever way you chose to travel. You are right in the depths of the dale, with hills and woodland around you. Its very easy to feel like you are right in the middle of nowhere!
