The Würzburg Gate stands at the eastern end of Miltenberg's old town. Together with the Mainz Gate at the western end of the town, it forms the historic end of the old town. The gate is part of the old city fortifications, built in the 14th century. Originally, the gate served as a means of defense and control: Anyone wishing to enter the city had to pass through here and often pay tolls or taxes. The name "Würzburger Tor" derives from the direction toward Würzburg – the road led (and still leads) in this direction.

According to tradition, construction of a monastery (a simple wooden church and modest accommodation) began in Neusaß (old Nuweseze = New Seat) as early as 1152. Wolfram von Bebenburg donated the land to the monks of Maulbronn as a token of gratitude for his safe return from the Second Crusade (1147-1149).
