Excellent spot to stop. BLOC Coffee is great, along with Davinci's pizza! Also a local bike shop (albion) nearby

numerous cafe's and places to stop, loads of culture and a lovely bar scene is popping up. If you remember last of the summer wine this is for you. tours a pleny. Theres also compo's cafe which does pretty good fish and chips but its a hike from the centre at the top of a hill.

Low Lane Swing Bridge is a minor waterways place on the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation (New Junction Canal) between Sykehouse Lift Bridge (Sykehouse village is about a mile to the east.) An ancient market town that is still thriving today, dominated by its Priory Church which dates back to Anglo-Saxon times. An ideal place to grab a hot meal in any of its pubs and cafes, or visit the local brewery.

One of the few bridges that goes over the river Don. The tranquility of the river is quite beguiling but be careful as there is no footpath going over the bridge.

Quiet village with nice pub stop

Fairburn Ings nature reserve is managed by the RSPB. It used to be a coal mine but has been transformed over the last 60 years to a haven for wildlife. It's an important breeding and nesting site for water birds. The star species that you may see are Bittern, Willow Tit, Kingfisher, Tree Sparrow and Spoonbill. The visitor centre has information, toilets and a cafe. It's open 10:00 - 17:00 in the summer and 10:00 - 16:00 in the winter.

The village gaol was dug out of a limestone crag and measures only 8ft by 6ft. Inside there is nothing but a stone bench. An uncomfortable place to be locked up. It is an impressive sight by the side of the road. The window bars are the originals.

The small village of Hillam has a lot of history, dating from the 10th century and with ten grad II listed buildings and 1 grade II listed milestone in the village. There is also an old village pump which has been restored. The Cross Keys pub and Hillam Potting Shed art cafe provide refreshments for the weary cyclist.

Newton Lane runs from the A656 at Allerton Bywater in the west almost to Fairburn in the east. It passes through Fairburn Ings, an RSPB nature reserve. Once a centre of coal mining, it is now a varied habitat for wildlife, including the rare bittern and spoonbill. There is a cafe and toilets at the visitors centre about halfway along Newton Lane on the south side of the road,

Holmfirth is the home of the long running TV series Last of the Summer Wine which ran from 1973 all the way to 2010. It's easy to see why it was chosen by location scouts as it is a picturesque town right in the Holme Valley with gorgeous country views all around. There are plenty of cafes, tearooms, pubs and restaurants in Holmfirth and it makes a great base for exploring the northern tip of the Peak District National Park.

Winscar Reservoir was created in 1850 and sits just inside the Peak District National Park. From here you can enjoy spectacular scenery and there is a tarmac path between the two car parks up here which can be ridden by road bike. There is often an ice cream van here in the summer.

Emley Moor Mast is a TV transmitter that is the tallest free standing tower in the UK. At 319m high (1047ft), it is taller than the Eiffel Tower. It provides television coverage for most of Yorkshire and across to Manchester and the Pennines. The mast dominates the skyline around here and can be seen for miles.

The bridge here across the canal is a swing bridge. When the lights are flashing on the road, the bridge is open and a watercraft is travelling through.

Rothwell Castle was originally an 11th century timber castle or fortified manor house, founded by Ilbert de Lacy. From the 13th century, it was used as a royal hunting lodge, by the kings of England and was once owned by John of Gaunt.
