6月 23, 2025, Farleigh Hungerford Castle
I don’t usually like audio guides but this was really well done. Interesting castle history, but also the characters and stories. And the chapel at the end is an excellent finale. I spent almost an hour here. No cafe but you can get tea/coffee/ ice cream. A good stop!

This picturesque moated medieval castle was built in the 1370s by Sir John de la Mare. It's heavily influenced by French design and features a compact layout with four round corner towers and thick defensice walls.

About the patronage of this church: Saint ANDREW is one of the twelve apostles that Jesus Christ called to follow him. However, in the biblical accounts he is usually somewhat overshadowed by his much more famous brother: Saint Peter. In the Gospels we find the calling of the two siblings presented in different ways. According to the text of the Gospel of John (John 1:40-42), Andrew is called first (together with another disciple whose name is not mentioned). Later he tells his brother that he has found the Messiah. The feast of Saint Andrew in the calendar of saints is on November 30th in all major Christian denominations. The X-shaped white "St. Andrew's Cross" on which he was executed forms the national flag of Scotland against a blue background and has also found its way into the national flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

A castle with a family history from 1160 to today. The family tree is simply gigantic.

Managed by English Heritage this is a paid entry property unless your a member. The castle is a fortified mansion started in the 14th century. Today it's a ruin but there is still quite a lot left to explore. If you don't pay you can see the entrance from the car park which is quite impressive. You can also walk around the base on a footpath to the right (when facing the castle on the road). Open 10:00 - 17:00 everyday.

A truly magnificent Cathedral and a great place to stop for a break. There are benches and a large green in front of the Cathedral. There are also some very pretty surrounding buildings, especially in Vicar's Close.

You can enter part of the grounds for free, the other parts are charged. The building is well maintained and still used and much bigger than it initially appears to be.

As the seat of an ancient cathedral and diocese, Wells is historically regarded as a city. Its city council boundary area, surrounded wholly by countryside makes Wells the smallest free-standing city in the UK (2.11 sq mi). The City of London is smaller but is part of a much larger urban area.

Incredibly beautiful cathedral that is free to enter, though donation is recommended for the upkeep of such a stunning place. It's in my top 10 cathedrals around the world (and I've been to MANY cathedrals).

Wells Cathedral is one of the most beautiful of all England’s cathedrals. Built between 1176-1450, the cathedral is in the Early English Gothic architectural style. The Grade I-listed building is a fascinating place to visit at any time of year; rich in history and beauty. Set in the heart of the tiny city of Wells, this cathedral is a popular tourist attraction and can get busy at peak times. It is free to enter but people are expected to make a donation. 2月 24, 2020, The Bishop's Palace, Wells
The stunning Bishop's Palace has been the home of the Bishops of the Diocese of Bath and Wells for more than 800 years. Construction began around 1210 and continued into the 15th century. The Grade I-listed palace is adjacent to Wells Cathedral, another very impressive building within this historic city. There are beautiful gardens to explore at the palace, too. 2月 7, 2020, Farleigh Hungerford Castle
A medieval 14th-century castle. Farleigh Hungerford Castle belonged to the Hungerford family for two turbulent centuries. During the War of the Roses, the castle was held by the crown and some members of the family were executed. Unlike many other castles in the south, Farleigh Hungerford survived the Civil War. In 1686, Sir Edward Hungerford was forced to sell the castle after losing his fortune to gambling and extravagance. By the 18th century, the castle lay empty and fell into disrepair. Today, the castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument owned by English Heritage. You can visit 10am - 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entrance costs £5.70 per adult. The whole of Wells is worth a good wander, beautiful as it is, but the cathedral is definitely one of the highlights along with the main square and the bishops’s palace.

Three is also a cafe, shop, and possibility to go on a guided tour. You can find more information, here: https://www.wellscathedral.org.uk/

Village fairs and music in the summer. Sneak into the castle in winter and put a hot brew on the stove for those cooler days. 😉
