Old, stately gateway to the former St. Bernard's Abbey. Historical context: The Poor Gate, which provides access to the monastic grounds of St. Bernard's Abbey, played an important role in the 18th century for the needy from the abbey's wider area. A chapel is connected to the gate, where the poor first attend Mass before receiving alms or bread. In the past, massive distributions of herring and bread to the poor were organized on Maundy Thursday and All Souls' Day. It also attracted large crowds during times of famine, such as in 1698.
