The King Albert I Monument in Nieuwpoort was erected in 1938 in honour of King Albert I and the Belgian troops during the First World War. The monument, designed by Julien de Ridder, is circular with a diameter of 30 metres and consists of twenty columns made of brick from the IJzer valley. In the centre is an equestrian statue of King Albert I, made by sculptor Karel Aubroeck. On top of the ring beam is a walkway with orientation tables that offer a beautiful view over the IJzer plain.
