Historically, this area was a heathland. According to old maps from 1778, the area was used for agriculture. Asparagus was cultivated here until World War II. From 1977, Hoogheide was managed by the County of Bornem. Count Marnix de Sint Aldegonde managed the higher, dry heathland as woodland, and the lower lands as permanent hay and pasture land.
