Nice ride next to the small nete canal

Is just a fantastic ride! Small and narrow roads with little traffic (cars). Few cycle paths. Great cycling!

Why is Groenplaats called Groenplaats? In 1805 it became Place Bonaparte. The square was only given the name Groenplaats under Dutch rule and refers to the old name 'Groenkerhof'. In 2025, the Groenplaats in Antwerp will receive a thorough makeover. So there will be some disruption that year.

The Antitankgracht was constructed just before the Second World War to stop German tanks. Fortunately, that is no longer necessary today, but it does provide us with a nice location to cycle through.

The Groenplaats is located in the historic center of Antwerp and is one of the most famous squares in Antwerp. Tourists who visit Antwerp to shop almost automatically end up on this rectangular square. The Groenplaats is an important link on the route between the Grote Markt, the Handschoenmarkt and the Suikerrui. Some visitors settle down on one of the benches on the square, sit around the statue of Peter Paul Rubens or take a seat on one of the terraces that can be found around the Groenplaats. Since the Middle Ages, the Groenplaats was a cemetery that belonged to the Cathedral of Our Lady. It was not until the end of the eighteenth century that this cemetery was transformed into a square. This happened after Emperor Joseph II forbade the use of cemeteries within the city walls.

During the Christmas season there is an ice rink here and great fun in the hut.
