Starting point for a beautiful hike through Lembeke

The forest paths around Kaprijke are narrow, winding paths that meander through the forest. As you walk along the forest paths, you will pass small streams, open spaces in the forest and quiet corners where you are often alone.

This beautiful path through the Lembeekse Bossen offers an adventurous MTB experience with winding single tracks, sandy sections and roots that provide an extra challenge. The forest is densely overgrown and lets sunlight fall alternately through the trees, which creates an atmospheric rhythm of light and shadow.

The dramatic end of Omer and Lima Wauterstraat 6, Kaprijke On 23 August 1944, Omer (23 years old) and Lima Neyt (19 years old) were married in a civil ceremony. The wedding party took place in the garden of Lima's parents, in the Wauterstraat in Kaprijke. There was no music and no dancing, because of the war. Omer and Lima moved in with Lima's parents. In September, the arrival of the Canadians was announced. Because it was still crawling with Germans, Omer dug a shelter in the meadow behind the house. Three seats on one side, three on the other. On Saturday 16 September, Omer and Lima had crawled into the shelter, together with their father, mother and Adriana De Taeye, their neighbour. Her husband Alfons did not want to go into the pit. That day, Canadian vehicles drove in the Beekstraat between Kaprijke and Bassevelde. They were looking for remaining Germans and shot at everything that moved. When the Canadians saw Alfons walking from the shelter to the house in the evening, they mistook him for a German. They opened fire and aimed their flamethrowers at the well. It didn't take long before they realized their mistake... Father was the only one who wasn't injured, he managed to save mother from the well, but she was badly injured. Omer and Lima were burned alive in each other's arms. The neighbor didn't survive either. Mother died a few days later. Father died later from grief. They couldn't separate the bodies of Omer and Lima. That's why they were buried together in one coffin.

レンベークの森の端にあるこの礼拝堂は、1947年にヴァン・ゴーセム神父によって建てられました。レンベークが戦争の惨禍を免れたため、甘い慰めと平和の聖母に捧げられました。礼拝堂は、15のレンガ造りの小さな礼拝堂が巡る通路に囲まれています。礼拝堂の向かいには、ドイツの掩体の残骸の上に建てられた小さな聖母マリアの洞窟があります。
