Ten Houte means "at the wood, at the forest." Buggenhoutbos once extended all the way to Peizegem. During the Middle Ages, Ten Houte was a very important neighborhood. It was strategically located along the main road from Hainaut to the Scheldt (Briel). Ten Houte—now just the name of a street—was the last stop before travelers entered the large Buggenhoutbos. Ten Houte is the oldest residential area in Peizegem. (Information board a little further on)

The statue "The Cyclist" in Mere is a tribute to Lucien Van Impe, the legendary Belgian cyclist who won the Tour de France in 1976. The statue was unveiled in 2016, exactly forty years after his Tour victory.

The old avenue was planted to provide the castle residents with the necessary shelter. Whether it was intense sunlight or rain, the treetops effectively shielded them from these adverse weather conditions. We still enjoy these benefits today.

The castle itself is well closed off, but what a beautiful castle avenue leads to it.

I didn't immediately see a tractor lock, but the road is reserved for cyclists and pedestrians.
