The veneration of the Sacred Heart goes back a long way in church history (to the 12th century). In 1886, this neo-Gothic roadside chapel, on the corner of Muizenholstraat, was founded by the Deftingen family Vanderpoorten (notables), in gratitude for a healing obtained. The chapel was restored in 2008 by craftsmen from Lierde and with donations from benefactors. Inside, three restored polychrome statues. The flaming Heart of Jesus (centre). On the left, the statue of St. Joseph as the patron saint of the 'Good Death'. In his left hand, he, 'the carpenter', carries a set square. To the right of the Sacred Heart statue is the statue of Our Lady, who tramples the green serpent, symbol of evil, with both feet. The snake still has the apple in its mouth, symbol of the temptation of Eve in the Earthly Paradise. Behind the chapel you have a view of the upper part of the city of Geraardsbergen, with a bit of luck, the spire of the St. Bartholomew's Church is clearly visible, also the Vesten and the park above it and right at the top the wooded hill of the Oudenberg.
