Even in mid-August, during the rather dry summer of 2025, the path was quite boggy in places. Deep ruts from agricultural and forestry vehicles had turned into large puddles.

The Deux-Acren lock is the last one before the Dender River enters Flanders. After both Geraardsbergen and the upstream Walloon village of Deux-Acren were hit by a devastating flood in 2010 (which even claimed one life), plans were drawn up to carry out flood protection works on the Dender. Progress in Wallonia progressed faster than in Flanders: the dam works in Deux-Acren were completed in 2017.

The Mark (French: Marcq) is a tributary of the Dender that rises in the forest area of the Bois de Silly and the Bois d'Enghien on the border between the Hainaut municipalities of Opzullik and Edingen. The Mark then flows through the Flemish Brabant municipalities of Herne and Galmaarden and the East Flemish Viane (Geraardsbergen) to flow into the Dender in the Hainaut Twee-Akren (Lessen). The name Mark also indicates that the river flows through an old border area (Gothic marka means: a border, a limit). The village of Mark near Edingen is also named after the river. Part of the Mark valley is a protected nature reserve (Rietbeemd) and Natura 2000 area.

The Rietbeemd (French: Les Prés Rosières) is a cross-language recognised nature reserve in the valley of the Mark (tributary of the Dender) on the edge of the Flemish Ardennes in South-East Flanders and the north of Hainaut. The nature reserve is partly located on the territory of the city of Geraardsbergen (sub-municipalities of Overboelare and Moerbeke) and extends across the language border into Wallonia as the nature reserve "Les Prés Rosières" in Lessen in Hainaut (sub-municipality of Twee-Akren). The 80 ha reserve was founded in 1987 and covers the building-free part of the Marke. The reserve is part of the Flemish Ecological Network. It is recognised as European Natura 2000 area BE2300005 (Forests of the Flemish Ardennes and other South Flemish forests) on the Flemish side and as Natura 2000 area BE3200005 ('Vallées de la Dendre et de la Marcq') on the Walloon side. It is managed on the Flemish side by Natuurpunt and on the Walloon side by the "Ligue Royale Belge pour la Protection des Oiseaux" (LRBPO-Belgian League for the Protection of Birds).

The Château de l'Estriverie is an imposing historic residence dating back to the 13th century. Initially a fortified house surrounded by a moat, the current castle was rebuilt in 1630 by the Cottrel family. It is built of brick, limestone and sandstone, with slate roofs and a main courtyard accessible by a stone bridge. Classified as a historic monument in 1976, the site retains its turrets and outbuildings, as well as a chapel dedicated to Saint-Joseph. Today, the castle is still inhabited by the family of Yve de Bavay.
